This hazy yellow beer poured with a decent off-white head a a fresh floral aroma. The flavor is seriously bitter, but there is a tasty caramel malt base to balance it out. It’s a bit too piney for my taste, but hopheads will probably love it.

Bottle:   Dark dirty straw, slightly hazy, moderate white frothy head, nice lacing.   Soft perfumy aroma, slight hop presense, pale malt aroma.   Slightly bittersweet perfumy start, moderate hop bitterness.   Has a biting resiny aspect, minor grainess.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Slightly astringent finish.   Okay IPA, but a little harsh overall.   Seems somewhat clean, but has a perfumy aspect that makes it seem hotter than normal.   Its like it tries to hard to be much bigger.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, white, fully lasting. Body is hazy dark yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), moderately hoppy (resin, herbs, flowers), lightly to moderately yeasty (dough), with notes of lemon peel, pepper, gum, light notes of juniper berry, green grape, and sulfur. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Quite a surprise. Bottle conditioning is probably the reason for the wealth of subtlety in this sample; it’s quite likely I wouldn’t like this nearly as much when extremely fresh. The hop character does involve the usual green, resinous hop stink, and I dislike the raw yeast character (Pacman is always kinda dull and doughy), but there’s an awful lot going on besides those notes that really rocks me. Beautiful big lasting head, nice hazy "live" appearance, very good flavor balance (only slightly abrasive...thankfully not too citric despite the origin), velvety mouthfeel, etc. Pretty much everything about it is spot on. I’m not a big fan of Rogue, but this one (at least in bottle conditioned form) is excellent. Seriously, the esters and phenols going on in this remind me of some Belgian golden ales. In a country awash in one-dimensional hop bombs, this is truly a ray of hope.

Draught at Rogue Ales and Public House, Portland. Big hoppy aroma, with lots of citrus and pine.. Very fruity, well-balanced flavor with a burning hop finish and good fruit throughout. A great beer; the surprise of the day.

Draft at the quah. Pours a clear dark amber with a thin tan head. Big fruity sweet nose, oranges and tangerines. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Toast, caramel, and oranges on the mid palate. Sweet finish.

In short: A tasty IPA with discreet malts but flavourful and refreshing bitter hops. Very good.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed fresh soon after purchase (I think). Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Cloudy blonde body topped by a medium off-white head
In long: Neutral bready malt backbone body provides a not-so-flavourful white bread foundation leaving all the flavour spectrum available to the hops. This one is all about the hops. Intense pine-cone needles and grapefruits flavours provide a tasty and refreshing bitterness. What a weird idea to name a product for beer enthusiasts after a physically demanding sport. This is like naming an open-line sports radio show the Quantum Mechanic Hour.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2010 On tap at the Rogue place in San Francisco. Pours a slightly cloudy orange with a medium white head. A great nose; rich fresh citrus hops juicy. The flavor was great; a aggressive citrus hop, loads of caramel balance it out. Really well done.

(Rating #2332)
