COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich, malty beer with more hops added to this year's batch than in the past. Complex, with the flavors of Munich malt, fruit, and alcohol. Pretty nice, if I do say so myself.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2005 On draught at the brewpub, 4/9/2005. Dark amber-chestnut brown color, with a beige head, low retention (but at least it had a head). Mostly clear. Aroma of hops bitterness, light pine and floral notes, with some sticky orange-caramel interaction and very light yeast. Flavor begins with sticky caramel sweetness, followed quickly by hops bitterness. Unfortunately, it stays quite dry and bitter, with some chewy malt texture on the end, but not really much flavor, other than the bitter hops. I’d like to see more hops flavor and less bitterness. Very low, yet ample, carbonation, medium body with no alcohol apparency. The munich malt is apparent from the get-go, with that lightly grainy/lightly sour/dry flavor, slight earthiness and sourdough breadiness.

On tap at The Albany Pump Station (C.H. Evans). Reddish brown pour with a with just a hint of white head. Smells of fruit, a hint of chocolate and molasses, and a hint of booze. Fills your mouth with a creamy, alcoholic warming feeling and carries the sweetness from the nose. Somewhat boring for a barleywine, but, overall, it’s pretty nice.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured a clear amber with a gray head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was full of sweet grains and bread with some caramel and a bit of wet hay. Flavor began with wet hay and caramel and was juoined by a sweet bread note. A bit musty and some alcohol present.

A - Pours a dark brown color with just a hint of read around the edges with a finger of off-white head. The head reduced down to a ring around the glass lingering nicely. S - Aroma has some nice sweet lightly toasted caramel malts. There is also some dark fruit and some grassy hops mixed in. T - Starts off with some grassy hops and roasted sweet caramel malts. Also a bit of dark fruit . Through the middle, some more dark fruit sweetness (lots of raisins) come through. The finish is a mix of some toffee malt sweetness and some dark fruit sweetness, a touch of hops, and bit of booze that linger nicely. M - Medium-full bodied with a moderate-low amount of carbonation. A touch syrupy and the finish is a bit resiny, but very nice. D - Very nice and drinkable. Very nicely balanced and very tasty. The hop flavor added in is very nice and the finish is very tasty.

I received this from Aerozeppl in the Growling at the Moon Bif, Thanks for the opportunity to try this one. Pours a solid dark brown almost black, some ruby highlights when held to the light. Small off white head, looks more like a porter than a barleywine. Aroma is chocolate syrup, molasses, and a small bit of floral hops. Taste follows the smell but adds a small amount of alcohol as it warms up. Mouthfeel is creamy, but a little thin. Overall a great brew, not what I was thinking of when I think of barleywine, but a damn fine brew nonetheless. At 9.5% alcohol this one really snuck up on me.

Deep hazy ruddy pour. The nose is quite sweet with a bit of raisin and dried date aroma wrapped around Munich and crystal malt sweetness. The flavour is very sweet but is clean. Pronounced fruitiness and a kiss of sweet caramel. Sticky and chewy. It actually seems a little bit underattenuated – even for the style. Meh.

Growler filled at the Pump Station and consumed five days later. Pours a clear reddish brown (more red than brown) with a moderate, somewhat creamy, tan head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left light lace. Pleasant aroma of malt and caramel. The flavor is again malt and caramel along with just a bit of vanilla. Mild bitterness at the finish along with some mild-moderate alcohol warmth. Medium bodied. No problems.

UPDATED: APR 23, 2011 Draught. Poured a dark reddish brown color with little head. Aromas of plum, raisin, roasted malt, brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol. Flavor was heavily malty, with only some minor grassy hop presence in the finish. Dark fruit and caramel dominated. Overall, not bad, but certainly not a great example of the style. Re-rated 4.22.11. Clear red and orange pour, with aromas of mild raisin and sweet malt. Flavor of sweet raisin, toffee, and caramel. Simple, but decent. 7/3/7/3//14.

On tap at the Pump Station. Pours a clear brown with a medium large beige head. Big earthy malt, deep plum and prune, and a good bit of caramel. Medium bodied, smooth, a big punch of warming booze sneaks in a sucker punch and beats out the caramel to the palate. Some soft chocolate tones as well before a slow plum and malt finish with a bit more warming alcohol.

Slightly hazy brown coloured body with a light tan head. Aroma of malt, toffee, alcohol, nuts and figs. Medium to Full-bodied; Nice alcoholic taste with good musty fruit tastes and a pungent flavour that lasts. Overall, a good barleywine - very nice to try. I sampled this on draught at the Albany Pump Station in Albany, New York on 25 June 2006.
