3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 beerbill (3044) - Laurel, New York, USA - MAY 6, 2012Growler filled at the brewpub. Pours a very deep brown, just about black, with a thin tan head that lasted until the second sip and left light lace. Pleasant aroma of malt with some mild roast along with some coffee notes. The flavor is lightly roasted malt with a bit of smokiness to it. Some coffee and light chalk in the flavor as well. As the beer warms some light sourness emerges as well. Dry, chalky mouthfeel with a slight metallic twang. Medium bodied. Not thrilled with this one.

A - Pours a dark brown/black color with a finger of frothy tan head. The head fades slowly down to a thick ring leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is full of roasted sweet malts and chocolate malts. There is also some coffee aromas and some caramel as well.
T - Starts off with some nice roasted and slightly burnt sweet caramel malt with chocolate flavors as well. Through the middle some stronger sweet chocolate and coffee flavors come through. The finish is a mix roasted chocolate and caramel flavors that linger nicely.
M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and just a touch creamy. The finish has some nice roasted and sweet notes that linger.
D - Very drinkable. The balance of sweet flavors and roasted flavors mixes nicely. The chocolate and coffee flavors are also at nice levels as well.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 jgb9348 (3971) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - JAN 17, 2009
Nice deep brown coloured body with a light brown head. Aroma of malt, vinegar and coffee. Medium-bodied; Nuts up front with roasted malt lingering further back in the taste, with a bitter finish. The aftertaste shows more coffee behind. Overall, this beer is all right, but a bit too bitter for me. I sampled this on draught at the Albany Pump Station in Albany, New York on 25 June 2006.
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - JAN 25, 2004
Sample at the brewpub. Dark reddish brown, translucent, no head. Chocolaty-sweet aroma, more sugary than usual. Very little character in flavor or body: dry, cardboard, very light dried-out bready malts, no hops, thin, bit sour.
