3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DanielBrown (2722) - Birmingham (via Leicester), - DEC 27, 2003
UPDATED: APR 3, 2004 Keg at the Queen Victoria, Syston, Leicester. Very good Mild, my favourite so far. Creamy and slightly more opaque than my previous experiences with the style. Soft and smooth on the front of the palate, with a small burst of roasted malt to finish. Punctuated throughout with tasty chocolate notes. A very good session beer, so much so that I spent my whole Christmas Eve supping it - high praise indeed!

First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in May 1997. Cask, handpump dispense. Black in colour with ruby highlights and a thick creamy buff head. Pleasant roast malt in the long aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a burnt toast note from the black malt and then roast grain flavours with treacle toffee, plain chocolate and creamy coffee. Slight prickle of hop resins in the short aftertaste. Finish is slightly dry with hints of liquorice and molasses in there. An excellent session mild.

Cask, The Abberdale, Leicester. Dark mahogany with a cream head. Aromas are light toffee and weetabix with cola and yeast. Flavours are dry, light roast malts with low maltiness. Yeasty with some cream. OK mild.

The Plough, Littlethorpe, Leics. Pale ruby with a nitro creamy beige collar. Very faint roasted aroma buried by the slickness of the head, lace like cream, watery house chew of sultana , Hobnob crumbs. Watery dull mild Vs the Pitch Black I’m afraid.

A good example of a typical English mild ale. In my opinion, this is still Everards best drink, whilst not being anything special.
