JDW, Eastbourne. Coffee accented stout. Some roastiness and some bitterness. A clean slightly chalky mouthfeel. Quite dry, in the style of Guinness. Good.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - DEC 8, 2011
Tasted this in the Saltcot, Saltcoats (JDW) in October 2006. Cask, handpump dispense. Black with ruby tints around the edges and a thin off white head. Hint of burnt toast and cereal husks in the short dusty aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a thin watery base with dusty black malt evident. Very slight note of treacle toffee, weak coffee and roast grain but really lacks body and overall complexity. Dusty hop prickle noted in the brief aftertaste. Finish is rather thin with sweet black treacle just about noticeable. Overall tasted more like a weak mild. In fact this stout reminded me of Highgate Dark Mild in many ways. An ok stout but there are better examples out there.

Cask at The Friendship, Fallowfield. Very dark with ruby tinges at the edges; tan head. Fruit and coffee aroma. Roasted malts and fruit in the taste with an excellent drawn-out bitter finish. Superbly balanced palate. What draught Guinness should aspire to.

The Plough, Llttlethorpe, Leics. Clear mahogany, ruby glints, heaped dirty beige. Chocolate and roasted barley nose, good punchy roast and bittering hop, coffee splashes. Gwince with added roast and softening dunked biscuit for afters. Solid tasty stoot.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Rune (5000) - Tromsø, NORWAY - APR 1, 2008
Devil-black with russet highlights. No head. Black malts with a touch of liquorice in aroma and taste added by a hoppy accent (Half pint hand pulled at Bricklayers Arms in Putney, London 18.03.2008).
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 berkshirejohn (3020) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - MAR 11, 2008
Cask at the Brunswick Arms, Derby</I. Rather a let down when compared to the Brunswick Railway Porter; reddish black with a thick cream head; thin and watery with little of the promised coffee aroma; fruity and smooth, too sweet, and with little noticable finish.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 jgb9348 (3497) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - MAR 9, 2008
Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts and a bit of spice - nothing too potent. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty flavours dominate the taste with nuts and a bit of licorice showing through. Aftertaste has more malt than anything else, with a happy sweetness fading out the taste. Overall, a good stout - a bit light, almost like a mild...but very nice to try! I sampled this pulled from a cask at Market Porter in Borough, London, England on 09-March-2008.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Jonte (1223) - Gothenburg, SWEDEN - MAR 2, 2008
Cask at The Barony Bar, Edinburgh.
Dark brown almost black color with a creamy pale brown head. Aroma: Roasted malt, coffee, lightly smoky, dark chocolate. Flavor: Roasted malt, coffee, liquorice, dark chocolate, smoke and some lighter sweetness. Dry and bitter finish. The only porter/stout on cask that I could find on my trip to Edinburgh.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 evilsoc (191) - WALES - FEB 25, 2008
Not quite pitch black but very dark...oh wait, i get it now! Nice coffee aroma, fairly light on the palate for a stout, big coffee flavour, nice spirity warmth. good bitter sweet balance. Nicely drinkable, a proper "cold night" beer.
