2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 8/20 GT2 (5658) - Riverslime, California, USA - JAN 23, 2013
500mL Black IPA edition. I guess you can’t know for sure what bottle you have a priori. Pours a deep black with a massive coffee head. Huge lacing. Nose at first is heavy detergent/volatiles, plastic, olive brine. Doesn’t clear up for quite awhile- 10+ minutes. Taste is extremely papery, astringent, soapy, more plastic. Holy monkey this is not good. Palate destroying paper, oversteeped grain tannins, ultra astringent. Too bad...$13 drain pour. Fiance rating: 2.0
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 mixmasterob (829) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - JAN 8, 2013
Black pour with a big frothy dark brown head. Left tons of lace. Aroma was big time roasted malt and sticky piney hops. Slight hints of vanilla sweetness and spent coffee grounds. Flavors were big time bitter coffee with notes of citrus and dark malt. Bitter finish. Carbonation light, medium body. Not bad but I’ve had others in the style I prefer. I bought this thinking it was a normal IPA. Wrong chamber.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 alexsdad06 (3041) - Ohio, USA - DEC 1, 2012
Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium plus beige head. The aroma is roasted malts, earthy, citrus, resiny hops with some dark chocolate. The flavor has a nice roasted malt base, some char, earthy bitterness that lasts through the finish. This is pretty much what I would expect in a black ipa. This could use a touch more flavoring hops to go with the bitterness. I enjoyed the concept of not knowing.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Travlr (7984) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - NOV 24, 2012
Bottle. Very dark brown color, brown head. Aroma of pine needles dipped in dark bitter chocolate. Taste is bitter and roasted pine and burnt espresso. Very nice.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Cybercat (2451) - Georgia, USA - NOV 21, 2012
Strong aroma is quite hoppy and woody, and has a hint of sour orange. Pours a stout-like sable with a thick and persistent tan head. Satisfying flavor has roast malt, hoppy and woody notes with hints of cloves and sour citrus. Smooth, lively texture has good body and fizz, and leaves a hoppy, smoky finish. No risk here of a bad beer here!
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 drowland (4988) - Jacksonville, Florida, USA - NOV 20, 2012
11/20/12. 22oz bomber from Grassroots. Black pour with a nice khaki head that cuts to a ring but laces a ton. Damn. I was hoping these two beers had really different scores so I could say I dodged a bullet. Oh well. Dank hop aroma on top of bitter roasted malts that are ashy and acidic. Plenty of hop bitterness combines with more ashy, roasted malts, earthy dank hops, and another small touch of acidity. Not too shabby.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheBeerGod (4632) - Newport News, Virginia, USA - NOV 18, 2012
Bottle. Black pour with a tall, thick, foamy brown head. Aroma is piney and herbal hops with strong roasted malt, and dark chocolate with mint. Taste is roasted malt, strong herbal and floral hops, citrus notes, mint chocolate and hints of pine. Body is medium-full with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt, dark chocolate, light minty notes, floral hops, citrus and herbal hops. Tasty Black IPA!
