3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 trevor211 (1191) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 16, 2013
Pours black, with a pinkish tan head. This is an interesting one. Three separate flavors, all mild, combine in a nice balance. There’s the bittersweet roasted malts that give this brew its color, just a bit of smoke (they kept it subtle), and a crisp hoppy yeastiness that indicates a farmhouse style. After the other flavors fade, the faint smokiness remains, which is nice. Mild flavor, even milder aroma... not at all bad.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2013 Dark, dirty brown with thin creamy-tan head. Aroma is a farmy sap-citrus fusion. fruity juicy-fruit yeast notes. Flavor is more juicy-fruit citrus hops. Incredibly well brewed; I’m ecstatic!!! Medium body; the best session I’ve had in the better part of a year.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 elihapa (1488) - Honolulu, Hawaii, USA - FEB 11, 2013
12/6/12 notes: bottle, $3. Pours dark brown-black with a fluffy light tan head. Aroma of crushed saltine cracker, dried herbs and flowers, white pepper. A nice blend of saison yeast and noble hops. Flavor starts carefully, revealing rather simple notes of dry, semi-sweet toasted malts, bits of smoke, a dribble of hop brightness. A mustiness pervades, characteristic of many saisons. But before anything familiar is conjured, hop and char bitternesses come to bite, a bit abruptly, leading into a dry, desolate finish. Overall, there are elements of this beer that work (the nose), that don’t match (the finish), and that get along fine (mid flavors).
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ccex (826) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 11, 2013
12 oz bottle pours a dark brown/black with small khaki head and some lacing. Aroma is a peculiar mix of Belgian yeast, dark roasted malts, raisins, cherries, spices, and smoke. Taste is initially sweet/tart fruits with an earthy/funky dry finish and lingering smoke. Body is light to medium with average carbonation. An interesting experimental mix of a saison, a black IPA, and a smoked beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 MadDogMD (213) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - FEB 10, 2013
Not sure I’d like this, but had to try it. Nice nose of smoked malt, slight chocolate & roast, with some dark fruit Belgian yeast esters. Flavors started out the same, but took an unexpected turn with bitter, biting hops. Guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised, considering Stone was involved! Thought it was good, minus the harsh, bitter hop finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jcos (1205) - Maryland, USA - FEB 10, 2013
Location/Date:Bottle on February 10th, 2013.
Appearance: Pours dark black with light brown head.
Aroma: Aroma of spice and faint smoke.
Taste: Medium light bitterness, spice, some faint smoke that lingerings.
Palate:Light body, some fizz, lingering aftertaste of smoke.
Summary: Definitely an interesting beer. I am a fan of smoked beers, although for some reason this one is just okay in that department. Overall it’s a solid saison, although I guess I expect more when Stone and Stillwater are involved.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Darwenus (405) - Virginia, USA - FEB 8, 2013
Pours very dark but very thin, with a brief head. The aroma is anise, charcoal and some hops, and the flavor presents those notes, a faint presence of banana and citrus, and a mild hop tingle at the end.
