When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.

Bottle. Smoky nose, chocolate, coffee, light spice. Slightly cloudy black with a low, fine tan head. Flavor of spicy yeast, light smoke, coffee, licorice, a bit of dark cocoa. Dry and a bit raw. Bitter finish, though not exactly hoppy. A bit metallic, with some dark fruits and spicy astringency. Somewhat thin body. Very dry, herbal finish. OK, but not what I want in a saison.

bubbleflubber (1942) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - MAR 10, 2013
Pours ruby-mahogany into the glass, with a decent unassuming tan head that leaves soapy window wash lacing. The nose is of dark fruits. The flavors are semi-dry, of dark berries, smoke, some light hay and barnyard accents, Crystal malt and burnt toast. The finish is a toasted bitter, with LOTS of carbon (indicative of burnt toast... spot on). The palate is extremely smooth and provides a slick, velvety quaff. Very unique for a Saison. Indeed, curious and interesting. Nice experiment here for the 3 brewers.

Pours a very dark black-brown, darker than I expected with a light tan 1.5 finger head. Smells yeasty with some roasted characteristics and a slight smokiness. Flavor is slightly sweet and fruity to start off before revealing a mix of a peppery smoke and yeast. Finish is dry and slightly bitter. Mouth feel is pretty nice on this one, light to medium body with a light crisp carbonation. Overall an OK beer, not a huge Saison fan in the first place so wasn’t expecting to love it. Could use a little more of a smoke presence in my opinion.

Black with thin but steady head Farmland, roast, smoke, liquorice in aroma. Medium body, bubbly. Very saisonlike farmy taste with slight roast and aggressive hopping. Aftertaste bitterness and roasted malt. Some chocolate. Good crossover-style with dominating saison.

355ml bottle @ Kitty’s , Helsinki

Pours pitch black with a smooth light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, spices, hints of ripe fruits, smoke and yeast. Taste is an interesting mix of smokey, mildly roasty and hoppy notes with hints of spices, farmyard and yeast. Finish is hoppy, sweetish and malty with hints of berries, roastiness and smoke. Nice, quite interesting black saison.

UPDATED: JUL 16, 2013 330 ml bottle @ Kitty’s, Helsinki.
Pours a dark brown colour with a white creamy head. Aroma of sour berries, smoked wood and grass. Flavour of roasted malts, yeast, pepper, sourish berries, caramel and smoked wood. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Unbalanced and messy.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/26/2012. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of raisin, pear, apple, toast, cocoa, roasted malt, pepper, clove, light smoke, and earthy yeast spiciness. Very nice and unique aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, fruity, and spicy notes. Taste of apple, pear, banana, raisin, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, pepper, clove, smoke, anise, and earthy yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of light and dark fruit, cocoa, roasted malt, char, toast, clove, pepper, smoke, anise, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of fruity, malty, and spicy flavors; with a good sweetness/spiciness balance; and minimal cloying flavors present after the finish. Quite intense at first with the flavors, but it mellows out as you go. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, chalky, and lightly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good black saison. Good balance and complexity of unique flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

glennmastrange (2413) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - MAR 7, 2013
Bottle. Moderate malt notes of toasted grain, fresh herbs for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with hints of wood, vinegar and dried leaves. Head is small to average size, fizzy/frothy, tan with some slippery lacing and good legs and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark, yet clear brown. Flavor starts moderately acidic, then the long finish is moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is light to medium, dry with a carbonation between lively and fizzy. Nice Saison. Doesn’t taste like it looks, which is pretty good.

Bottle at Eulogy. Very, very dark orange brown pour with some little foamy circling galaxies. Dark Saison with some smoke. Burnt celery. Raisin pie. Cigarettes. Molasses. Rotted pears. Thyme. Smoked salmon. A sweet juicy black syrupy floral stout. Also a touch of sour and smoke. Thick palate. Hard to define. More complex than the other "Dark Saisons" I have had. Very interesting, well made and thought out. Just not sure if I really like drinking it.
