Pours a translucent black from the bottle with foamy off-white head and light lacing as it dissipates. Aroma of roasted malts, faint dark chocolate, dirt, ash, and a slight funky yeast note on the back end. Taste is odd, but complex; starts bitter and ashy, sweet and malty in the middle, then a kind of acetone ester on the back end. Good stuff, just really weird.

From draft in a tulip at Monk’s Kettle, murky slate with a moussey of-white 2" head. The aroma is sweetly with a hint of vanilla & smoke. Malt flavors of cereal and toast lead, body is medium-lean in the mouth, then the smoke blends in with cereal notes. A floral bittering charge from the hops noted in finish. On alternate sips, a Belgian saison yeast character noted in finish, with slight drying. Intriguing and balanced; ambitious to make these various elements all pull together.

Bottle from Fermentation Market. Black pour with a creamy beige head with some lacing. Nose is chocolate malts, ashy smoke, pepper, hints of yeast and some earthy hops. Restrained, uninteresting entry with notes of roasted malts, ash, smoke, peppery yeast with a spicy, earthy hop finish. Not bad and pretty interesting.

Bottle. Big, brooding pour of pitch black darkness and towering, boiling tan foam. The aroma is certainly smoky, yet restrained and comforting. The smoke is evident in the initial quaff, but settles in quickly behind some sweet malitiness and an almost tart finish. Rings hollow to me, unfortunately. It’s an enjoyable enough drink, but doesn’t warrant the $4/bottle retail. (#4899, 1/13/2013)

12 oz bottle black with a nice white head. Mild nose of yeastiness, The flavors are rather mild with pepper, yeast and some mild maltiness indicated.. Not real impressed with the collaboration..

Pretty black color..active carbonation..minimal head..typical saison nose..spice present..vanilla and smoke also readily available..hard to explain since this really is an interesting brew with notes of a saison, porter..smoke and perhaps something else..mouthfeel is pretty good with the smoke winning out..not really a fan of black ipa so i think i am a bit down on this one..interesting collaboration to try..

Bottle from Garden City. Black with lasting tan head and lace. Tart chocolate mildly smoky fruity herbal aroma. Mild fruity tart sweetness with dry herbal bitterness and lingering ashy smoke. Nice effervescent carbo. Much better than expected. Excellent.

Pretty cool beer. Sour/spicy yeast notes mixed in with roasted/slightly smokey notes, plus some Stone hoppiness.

Black pour with creamy tan head. Hoppy nose with saison yeast notes and light roasted malts. Light delicate body. toasty malts, more hops. smokey semidry finish.
basically a Rausch with some saison characteristics not bad!

Bottle; poured a dark cola brown with a smallish light brown head. Aroma of must, BO, roasted malt/smoke, earth, yeast and citrus. Flavor was solid, but perhaps not as radical as expected. Spicy and yeasty, some solid hop presence; the dark elements did not shine through in that big of a way. A solid saison.
