3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/26/2012. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of raisin, pear, apple, toast, cocoa, roasted malt, pepper, clove, light smoke, and earthy yeast spiciness. Very nice and unique aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, fruity, and spicy notes. Taste of apple, pear, banana, raisin, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, pepper, clove, smoke, anise, and earthy yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of light and dark fruit, cocoa, roasted malt, char, toast, clove, pepper, smoke, anise, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of fruity, malty, and spicy flavors; with a good sweetness/spiciness balance; and minimal cloying flavors present after the finish. Quite intense at first with the flavors, but it mellows out as you go. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, chalky, and lightly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good black saison. Good balance and complexity of unique flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Moderate malt notes of toasted grain, fresh herbs for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with hints of wood, vinegar and dried leaves. Head is small to average size, fizzy/frothy, tan with some slippery lacing and good legs and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark, yet clear brown. Flavor starts moderately acidic, then the long finish is moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is light to medium, dry with a carbonation between lively and fizzy. Nice Saison. Doesn’t taste like it looks, which is pretty good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at Eulogy. Very, very dark orange brown pour with some little foamy circling galaxies. Dark Saison with some smoke. Burnt celery. Raisin pie. Cigarettes. Molasses. Rotted pears. Thyme. Smoked salmon. A sweet juicy black syrupy floral stout. Also a touch of sour and smoke. Thick palate. Hard to define. More complex than the other "Dark Saisons" I have had. Very interesting, well made and thought out. Just not sure if I really like drinking it.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark cola colored beer with an off-white head. Aromas of smoke and raisins. Tastes of raisins, some coffee, roasted barley and other earthy flavors. There is even a hint of peanuts mixing in as well. There are also some subtle hints of spruce hops thrown in. Finish is semi-bitter and smoky. Oily mouth feel, full bodied beer. Easy to drink and tasty.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured nearly black but didn’t seem all that smokey or saison-y. Quite bitter in a grassy/herbal way.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at Jerry’s. Black with big, foamy, tan head / Musty, toasty nose of banana, dark fruit, smoke, cocoa, and roast barley / Medium body, mostly dry with some astringency, fruit nudged to the background, with bitter finish / Dry, mild, and bitter flavors of banana, smoke, salami, dark roast coffee, and prune / The bitterness dominates, and the potentially interesting flavors just quite aren’t up to it.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a dark but fairly transparent brown with little head. Aromas are of dank leaves, earthy malt and a little smoke. Flavor is sharply bitter and peat-driven... almost a tannin like edge to it. Mouthfeel is pretty thin and it seems a bit watery. The beer seems to have a bit of a herbal edge to it... almost rosemary or something.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep brown beer with a foamy tan head. Cereal grain nose with some spice and roasted grain notes. Spicy flavor with some yeast, banana, dark caramel and bitter citrus in the finish. I don’t get much smoke, but I’ll say it comes out in the finish. Interesting take on a saison.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
(Bottle, 0,355 l - BBE was almost completely scratched off, at Kittys, 20130301) The beer poured very dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had cowhouse, roasted malts, molasses and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were spices, smoke, sourness, sweetness, molasses and bitterness. Aftertaste was mildly sour and bitter. Not a good brew. I do like saisons but this one was just a weird mess.
