When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe itís best not to even talk about it.

Dark cola colored beer with an off-white head. Aromas of smoke and raisins. Tastes of raisins, some coffee, roasted barley and other earthy flavors. There is even a hint of peanuts mixing in as well. There are also some subtle hints of spruce hops thrown in. Finish is semi-bitter and smoky. Oily mouth feel, full bodied beer. Easy to drink and tasty.

Poured nearly black but didnít seem all that smokey or saison-y. Quite bitter in a grassy/herbal way.

Bottle at Jerryís. Black with big, foamy, tan head / Musty, toasty nose of banana, dark fruit, smoke, cocoa, and roast barley / Medium body, mostly dry with some astringency, fruit nudged to the background, with bitter finish / Dry, mild, and bitter flavors of banana, smoke, salami, dark roast coffee, and prune / The bitterness dominates, and the potentially interesting flavors just quite arenít up to it.

Bottle. Pours a dark but fairly transparent brown with little head. Aromas are of dank leaves, earthy malt and a little smoke. Flavor is sharply bitter and peat-driven... almost a tannin like edge to it. Mouthfeel is pretty thin and it seems a bit watery. The beer seems to have a bit of a herbal edge to it... almost rosemary or something.

Deep brown beer with a foamy tan head. Cereal grain nose with some spice and roasted grain notes. Spicy flavor with some yeast, banana, dark caramel and bitter citrus in the finish. I donít get much smoke, but Iíll say it comes out in the finish. Interesting take on a saison.

(Bottle, 0,355 l - BBE was almost completely scratched off, at Kittys, 20130301) The beer poured very dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had cowhouse, roasted malts, molasses and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were spices, smoke, sourness, sweetness, molasses and bitterness. Aftertaste was mildly sour and bitter. Not a good brew. I do like saisons but this one was just a weird mess.

Dark brown colored beer with a khaki head. Moderate smoke aroma, dark fruits, and a fair amount of roast. A bit of metal, some grass, coffee, yeast, and black pepper. The flavor is lightly sweet with some fruit and bread notes. Heavy roasted malt, a fair amount of smoke, and a touch of metal. Light coffee and chocolate notes, spicy black pepper, grass, and yeast.

12 oz from bev4less. Pours dark mahogany hue with a thin, but lacy off-white foam head. Straight away the nose is of dark malt and hops. Lots of dark bittering hops. Chocolate and coffee notes are also present. Even more coffee in the first sip, very roasty malty flavor on this one... the hop bitterness from the nose has settled into the background a bit. Is it a saison? Not so much... a black IPA? Maybe... but, of course, Iím sure the recipe grain bill and yeast would prove me wrong. Still, something about this one screams black ipa, or even robust porter. Mouthfeel is a little thin on this one, in spite of the richness of the flavor package. Clings decently well to the tongue, but on the underside. Anyway, itís good... but not as interesting as the deScription made out.
