When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a dark brown color with a large brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of mild smoke, chocolate, nutty notes. The taste is stone fruits, mild roast, mild smoke, citrus and a hoppy finish. Interesting.

12 oz bottle purchased from New England Wine & Spirits. Poured nice & dark into a mini snifter. Nice light brown head & earthy nose. Fruity ester turns into clove & subtle malt flavor. Finishes a bit dry with a charred flavor that hangs.

Bottle... Poured dark brown, somewhat black, with a moderate, eggy/khaki head. Nose had some roast, super mild smoke, and a significant ashy character. Tasted of roast, chalky, cereal grains, a mild smoke tone with yeast esters and spice. Finished with some smoke. The smoke is there, it’s all over, but very faint and not in your face.

durhambeer (2500) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - DEC 21, 2012
Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham. Pours dark brown with reddish orange edges. Beige head. Nice lacing. Nose is slight smoke, charred malts bright peppery notes and some cloves. Smoke is subtle. Hoppy, but integrated into the flavor. Rye-like spice. Thin palate. This is good.

Bottled. Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Good retention and nice foamy residue. Aroma has saison esters quickly followed by a nice campfire ash, roast, and then earth. I’m liking this. Medium sweet attack followed by a light roasty finish that grows bitter. Another attempt at a black saison and this one is a success. Maybe the current style list should be amended.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours dark brown with ruby glints and a tan/beige head. Aroma is lightly smoky and earthy. Med body. Flavor is earthy, very lightly smoky, with some smooth chocolate and burnt malts. Finishes dry, but hardly bitter.

marcus (6011) - Sacramento, California, USA - DEC 20, 2012
Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours dark brown with a disappearing dark beige head and an earthy anise aroma. There is a somewhat bitter chocolate and burnt treacle flavor. Interesting and very tasty. Tastes nothing like a saison aside from a faint yeasty fruitiness at the finish.

Thin and watery, not much smoke, not much spice, not much hoppiness. Not sure what they were going for.

Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - DEC 19, 2012
12oz bottle from Binny’s Lincoln Park. Pours a black colored body with a slight ruby hue and a finger-width, creamy and frothy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is bready yeast up front with some fruity esters, a somewhat sweet malt backing, smoke, clove and pepper, and some earth. Flavor is similar. Lightly sweetened, bready malts up front before a good amount of yeast comes in with a few clove phenols, pepper, and fruity esters. Smoke and earth come on more towards the end with a light roastiness as this finishes dry, moderately bitter, and somewhat ashy with a good amount of yeast and a bit of a sweetness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium, creamier body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, an interesting beer, but a pretty tasty one. Nicely balanced between the malt sweetness, yeast, smoke and roast, and earthy hops keeping this dry and easy drinking. Not bad at all.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2013 12oz bottle compliments of AndyReynolds - pours deep amber with beige head and decent lacing. Nose is yeast and hay. Flavor adds bread, spices, slight booze, roasty and light smoke. Nothing like the last experience. Odd but yet interesting. Draft - pours dark amber with tan head and great lacing. Nose is cancelled by andyreynolds’ fruity pumpkin pie soap and the scented candles here at dutch’s. I’m getting smoky vanilla. Flavor adds smoke, citrus and yeast. Dry. Moderate bitterness. Not like any saison I’ve ever had. 12/19/2012 8/4/8/4/15 or 3.9.
