COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe itís best not to even talk about it.

Bottle. Pours a nice deep brown to black with a medium sized head. Some light estery yeast and musk on the nose. I donít really get much smoke, just smells like a nice floral saison. Medium bodied, esters and a bit of grassiness. Really no smoke or roast coming through here. Sweet wheat comes through, a bit of muskiness. Drinking this blind Iíd never think this was dark in color, none of that comes through at all. Tasty but not what I was hoping for.

pours black, with little head. Sort of a smoky chocolate aroma, with a touch of Belgian/saison style funk. Flavor profile is similar to the aroma, all of the flavors are present, but none overwhelming. Enjoyable, and should be pretty interesting in about two years.

On tap at mugs ale house with Jenny. Pour is dark, off white head, thick lacing. Floral and herbal in the upfront taste.. Burnt caramelize malts in the finish coupled with bitter pine. Great finish

Bottle poured a pitch black with a small mocha head and notable lacing. Aroma includes funky yeast, dark fruit, slight smoke, and sweet malt. Taste begins with dark fruit and roasted malt before yeast takes over. Smoke and dark fruit flavors linger on the palate.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours a very dark brown capped with a two finger foamy off white head, some wispy lacing. On the nose hints of smoke and farmhouse yeast. Opens with grassy hops, joined by musty farmhouse yeast and a hint of smoked wood. Finishes with continued yeasty notes and some mild hop bitterness and slight pear skin-tinged fruit notes. Fairly light-bodied and slick, moderately carbonated. Overall, nothing outstanding, but a solid brew. Considering this is a collaboration which as a whole tend to disappoint, thatís saying a lot.

Type: Draft Glass: Tulip From: Stone Brewing Company Price: $6 BOD: N/A Black with a finger (when I got it) of tan head. Good lacing - foamy and milky. Good retention. Smelled toffee, caramel, chocolate, molasses and light dark sour fruit. Tasted sour fruit, grape, kiwi, plum, chocolate and toffee with a slightly bitter finish. Medium body. Oily texture. Fizzy (high) carbonation. Astringent finish. I was a bit disappointed overall. Lots of flavors but nothing that really stood out.

Appearance: Pours a amber hued dark brown with a white pinstripe.

Aroma: Low tide at the shore. Tripel yeast, camp fire.

Taste: Spicy dry belgian yeast, firm euro hop spice finishes woody.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied modest carbonation.

Overall: I wasnít that excited to try this. Judging the book by itís cover, this didnít sound like a beer Iíd dig. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I did enjoy this beer. Stone seems to have a good grip on Saisons, even though this is far from a typical Saison. Iíd be curious to see what kind of barrels Stone tries to age this beer in, Iíd probably go with a red wine barrel or a smokey Scotch whiskey barrel.

12 ounce bottle. I was expecting better things, given Stoneís strong track record on collaboration beers. Aroma is soda, mild roasted toffee, and sweet. The smell disappears quickly. Appearance is a dark, transparent brown with lots of fizz on top but only a little foam retention and practically no lacing. Flavors are toffee, esters, lots of sugar, some hops and some herbs. Unfortunately the smokiness takes a back seat, way in the back. Palate is fizz crackling through a light liquid body. Overall - sorta mundane flavor character and not worth the price. I would have liked more of a smoked presence. Pulling off a smoked saison seems a bit like an oxymoron to me though. Iíd like to hear about any other beers out there that can pull it off in an exciting way.
