4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Coffee and woody campfire smoke aromas. Dark, crystal clear mahogany red color with a wispy beige head. Usually that kind of smoky aroma means a Rauchbier which I’ve never developed a taste for, but here the smoke perfectly matches the dark chocolate sweetness and espresso bitterness. You can almost taste charred wood and grain, but it’s somehow held back just enough that it’s delicious and interesting without being overwhelming. There seems to be some earthy, even flowery hop bitterness here, but the charred dryness seems to either mix with or cover this. Leaves behind a nice coffee, graphite dryness and a little bittersweet chocolate. Another excellent Stone collaboration ale.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown color with a little cloudiness . Aroma is of grass, chocolate, faint smoke, toffee, and light spices. Palate is a little lighter than expected. Flavors in this are cocoa, dark chocolate, roastiness, slight earthiness, roasty/toasty, and smoke finish. This is basically a light rauch beer. Actually pretty disappointing in my opinion.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz bottle pours a clear brown with a sticky head. Very astringent at first. Once it warms, it opens up a bit. Definite Saison tendencies on the nose. Flavor is still pretty astringent, with bitter malts and smoke fighting with each other and creating a bit of a mess. Just ok.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
pours a pitch black with fluffy, long lasting brown head, nice lacing. Aroma is somewhat yeasty, with nothing especially pronounced. Medium bodied, lower on carbonation than you would expect although not in a bad way. The flavor is a progression starting with yeasty notes, moving to soft, nuanced smoke, and then lingering dark chocolate / coffee tones on a bitter finish. Overall an interesting brew although not something I would have again.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at SmallBar. Pours a dark amber brown with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malt with a hint of smoke and dark grain. Flavor has dark grains and a hint of smoke that grow to bitter chocolate and roasted malts.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a deep brown with a finger and a half of rocky tan head, settles in minutes with some lacing. Aromas of sweet grass/hay, slightly roasted, smoky, and fruity like belgian yeast. Flavor is roasted malt up front with noticeable hops, then sweeter with nutty and almost fruity tones. Hints of herbal notes. Finish is mildly bitter and lingers. Strong carbonation and medium body without a slightly oily mouthfeel. An interesting saison, but not as memorable as some of the other Stone collaborations.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 17, 2012 Bottle. Dark pour which is clear held to the light with a tan head. Aroma is light smoke, herbs, clove, and some bitter hops on the finish. Smoke comes through much more in the flavor and is mixed with the clove before some hop bitterness at the end. Clean mouthfeel. The beer has all of the advertised elements in relative harmony but the saison yeast does not really play that well off the smoke IMHO. Worth a try. Note - I’m drinking this on tap day after my bottle review and the clove/yeast character is reduced which allows the smoke and hops to assert more and improves the taste. Kinda cool beer actually if you give it a chance.

Bottle from Bevmo arrogant bitches. Dark brown reddish tint pour with off white head. Aroma is fruity Belgian yeast some spice, cooked dark fruits. Taste is initially fruity followed by slight roast/smoke with a ton of hops. Like an IPA mixed with a porter and a saison. Very interesting style but I enjoy it!!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head with moderate lacing, over a clear, reddish brown (SRM 25) body....nose is light smoke, hints of pine, citrus......taste is light smoke, light sweet fruits including pear, apple, mango, with hints of dried fruit including fig, plum, hints of barnyard, cocoa, ending with a lingering slightly sweet citrus peel bitterness....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. This is a delightfully complex and well disguised creation. It is a mixture of a black IPA, Saison, and Smoked. The smoke was done with a light hand. The malts were heavy, and the hops were dumped in. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7
