3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 17, 2012 Bottle. Dark pour which is clear held to the light with a tan head. Aroma is light smoke, herbs, clove, and some bitter hops on the finish. Smoke comes through much more in the flavor and is mixed with the clove before some hop bitterness at the end. Clean mouthfeel. The beer has all of the advertised elements in relative harmony but the saison yeast does not really play that well off the smoke IMHO. Worth a try. Note - I’m drinking this on tap day after my bottle review and the clove/yeast character is reduced which allows the smoke and hops to assert more and improves the taste. Kinda cool beer actually if you give it a chance.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Bevmo arrogant bitches. Dark brown reddish tint pour with off white head. Aroma is fruity Belgian yeast some spice, cooked dark fruits. Taste is initially fruity followed by slight roast/smoke with a ton of hops. Like an IPA mixed with a porter and a saison. Very interesting style but I enjoy it!!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head with moderate lacing, over a clear, reddish brown (SRM 25) body....nose is light smoke, hints of pine, citrus......taste is light smoke, light sweet fruits including pear, apple, mango, with hints of dried fruit including fig, plum, hints of barnyard, cocoa, ending with a lingering slightly sweet citrus peel bitterness....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. This is a delightfully complex and well disguised creation. It is a mixture of a black IPA, Saison, and Smoked. The smoke was done with a light hand. The malts were heavy, and the hops were dumped in. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pour: Pours a dark brown. Holding it up to the light it turns a dark red. Poured with about a finger of head. Head is tan with a slight orange
Smell: Smell is a classic Saison. Floral notes a hint of smoke. Rose water. Green Vegitable. Black Pepper. Sweet malts with just a slight hop aroma. It also has that strong yeasty smell that comes through on a good
Taste: The taste starts out with a sweet malt then builds quickly into a smoked meat taste. (Not in a bad way) After a few sips the taste calms down and mellows. It starts to let more of its hops out in the mouth then leaves a smoked salty caramel taste on the way down. After drinking the beer for a while the smoked taste dies down and you are left with a tart and hoppy Saison.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Stone. Bubbly black pour, off-white to tannish head. Dry grain, sweet stone fruit, spice, peppery, peach, rotting grass, and light smoke (kind of harsh lighter fluid). This beer is pretty rough, sure its trying to be unique, but it doesn’t really work.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
How the hell is Colorado the first place to get this? - anyway, I am not sure why I am such a sucker for these Stone collaborations, but as soon as I saw Stillwater was involved in this, I new I needed to try it - besides, it’s a smoked black saison - how could I NOT try that? - sure, it’ll probably be a train wreck, but probably an interesting one - anyway, pours dark brown, nearly black - fizzy head that rapidly shrinks and almost completely disappears - nose is quite smoky and woody, with some mild phenolics that play off of that well and remind you that this is supposed to be a saison of some sort - there isn’t much else to the nose, but I like the smokiness so much that I do not really mind this - moderate carbonation - slightly slick mouthfeel - a slight bit of dark malt sweetness at first, but the beer dries out fast, just as the char and roast of the malt kicks in - a nice mineral note through the middle compliments the dryness - mild smoke arrives late - the tail end remains dry, but also gets rather spicy/peppery - finish is moderate bitterness and a light woody char - only a hint of phenols throughout remind you of the yeast used here - given the nose, I would have liked more smoke in the flavor - this beer is pretty interesting, but it doesn’t quite all come together in the end.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pour out of 12 oz bottle into tulip, thick black pour, nice cream tan head, dissipates but leaves a nice half finger of tan head, laces fairly well. Aroma brings notes of grass, slight orange peel, chocolate, smoke, hints of caramel, toffee, almost a grape like, fruity quality in there as well, hints of coriander and light spice. Interesting. Taste is a mix of sweet grape, orange, some pear, peach hidden in there go into some sweet caramel, cocoa nib, dark chocolate, roast, slight earthy grass notes as well, leading into a fairly bitter, roasted, and smoky finish that helps it to dry out in the end. It is very interesting, kind of grows on me as it warms but overall seems a bit messy.
