COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.

2012 bottle that’s been in my fridge since I bought it, served in a tulip. Charcoal color liquid in the glass with an off white head. Moderately well laced. Faint aroma that is really hard to detect. My only aromatic synapse is dark rye seed. Taste is light but not whimpy. Farmhouse yeast presents itself first with a slightly fruity quality. Next up is charred malt grain and a whisper of smoke. I think the smoke is only present because I know it to be there. The smokiness could easily be mistaken for dark roasted malt. One thing is for sure that this is exceptionally well crafted; the flavors meld together seamlessly, including the hops that provide an aromatic touch. I was expecting a smoky Saison and while this isn’t as bold as I had hoped, it is probably a lot better.

12fl oz bottle poured into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint. Deep ruby with ample creamy tan head. A lot of hops in the nose during the initial pour with Belgian candy sugar taking over soon after. A very earthy, smoky flavor. Lively carbonation. Long bitter finish, also smoke. A bold interesting brew.

Bottled. Pours dark brown in color with a small tan head. Bit of slightky smoked wood and bacon in aroma. Later on these turn into moro chocolatey notes though. Perhaps some peppery notes too and notes of dark malts as well. Sweetish taste, some burnt rubber and smoked fruits. A bit weird combination, but seems to work quite well though. Fruity and slightly smoky finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks kerenmk. Dark brown to black with a beige head. Aroma of roastiness, yeast, a smoked hint, some overripe fruits and a bit of coffee. Slightly sweetish flavor, roasty, with some coffee, a bit of yeast, light fruitiness, a faint acidic notes and a drier, somewhat bitter finish. Medium-bodied.

Bottle
Aroma: Smoke, very slight hint of a tart aroma.
Appearance: Opaque black with good creamy off-white head.
Taste: Smoke, licorice, subtle bitter chocolate. A unique, slightly sweet saison undertone
Palate: Medium mouthfeel, some bitterness toward the finish. Slightly dry, bitter, smokey aftertaste.
Overall: Interesting, relatively complex beer. Mostly well integrated elements.

I really don’t get the hype. I have great respect for each of the collaborating breweries, but just don’t think this is up to much. Way overrated in my opinion. Aroma is barely there, looks bellow average, and taste mediocre. So you did a (mediocre at best) black saison, woopdido. This is really nothing to get excited about, I can think of main stream beers I would rather drink, and I don’t say that lightly.
