3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle:   Deep brown, moderate frothy beige head, spotty lacing.   Black Saison, really?   Pale toasted malts, slight barnish/musty notes.   More of a black malt presense.   Its like a sweet bright Black Bier.
Hard to wrap my head around this.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Soft campfire, charred grass, dust, barn, and hay on the finish.   Not bad, but not what I think of when I drink a Saison.   In this case, a
Black Smoked Saison.   Not bad, but some aspects I dont know that I want to see together.   No real flaws, just an odd combination of flavors put together.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle courtesy of ericdevin. Light smoke, tart citrus, very light funk. Deep dark mahogany with a large tan head. Light smoke, roasty malt, brine, some slight funky flavor with a very subtle grassy bitter finish. Light body, moderate carbonation. An OK beer, but definitely not in keeping with the bottle marketing.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle that I have had since the release in the fridge (its really been that long?). Pours with a near black hued body and a thick deep brown head with good retention and lace. Aromas are of floral, pine, juniper and some juicy esters, pomegranate, perfumey. Low smoke. Flavors are smokey, lightly bitter, very estery, and some Stone house flavor. Lightly metallic, odd perfumey and some ester that I cant place (spice like...jasmine or something like that). Crisp apple and bartlett pear. Unique (for a saison, and I am not even trying to comment on the "black" and "smoked" characters...the ester profile of the yeast and interplay with the hops is unique). Fuller bodied, off dry, medium carbonation.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours like a cola with a foamy tan head. Light smoke aroma, some citrus. Hoppy flavour, really lacking a great saison yeast taste, some coffe flavours. Hmmm fine beer, but I’m not tasting what they’re selling.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle served in a Southern Tier Tulip
A - Pours a very dark brown with red highlights when held to the light. 1.5 finger mocha head clings to the sides of the glass. The foam stays around slowly forming a clear center with a tall collar. Below average lacing.
S - Roasted grain, charred wet hay, woody mushroom background, cold coffee grains. The barley runs strong throughout the aroma with notes of old burnt leather and hints of funky yeast. Notes of perfumy lavender show up as it warms.
T - Roasted grains, sharp berry fruit tartness, charcoal wood, hints of acidity, A strong burnt note with the berry tartness clinging the edges of the tongue. It turns smokey toward the middle with leafy green hops showing up. Floral hops ride on top of the strong roast, while finishing earthy with a smokey but crisp finish.
M - Ample carbonation makes a medium creamy body. Hop oils are left on the palate along with roasted grain and a dry finish.
This is not a subtle dark Saison. The roast dominates and creates a smoky background against the berry fruit. The hops are not shy and blend well with hints of wood and campfire funk. The funk is light but adds character overall. I enjoyed exploring this beer. It’s heavy on the smoke and roast with the yeast adding delicate flavor. Thanks Hopswagger!

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Brown pour with an off white head. Bland non-descript hops, mellow yeast, and spice notes. Can’t find the smoke on this one. Average body and mouthfeel.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks to drew, I think. Thanks! Pours a deep brown/black with a tan head. Nose is meaty with medium smoke and subtle clove and roast. Some rose floral notes along with a tea thing. On tasting, much cleaner and better than anticipated. Smokey with some more salty meat and a balancing yeast profile from the fermentation. The roast works as well. Thought I’d hate this. Solid stuff.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Oily black pour with a thin brown head. This beer smells exactly like grilled mushrooms. Smokey, vegetal, fungal, slight pepper on the nose. Flavor is lightly smoked and peppery, but kind of thin and weird. Not very good.
