3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle, a saison which is smoked and highly hopped? weirdness. Its like a black IPA used with Saison yeast and the smoked part gets stomped out by the hops, surprisingly okay with me.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at Eulogy. Very, very dark orange brown pour with some little foamy circling galaxies. Dark Saison with some smoke. Burnt celery. Raisin pie. Cigarettes. Molasses. Rotted pears. Thyme. Smoked salmon. A sweet juicy black syrupy floral stout. Also a touch of sour and smoke. Thick palate. Hard to define. More complex than the other "Dark Saisons" I have had. Very interesting, well made and thought out. Just not sure if I really like drinking it.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a lazy Saturday afternoon while doing some errands. Appearance is a moderate, pitch black with a thin white head that laces to the glass. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, light yeast, also a touch of roasted malt. Taste is pretty good, definite smoke presence with a light yeast flavor, also a very light touch of fruit and hops. I don’t know how to classify this one, doesn’t really taste like a saison to me. Still pretty good.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. A deep mahogany pour with a skim of a tan head. The earthy aroma features some caramel, roasted malts, toasted pumpernickel, light smoke, a hint of anise, pine, and touches of bananas & lemons in the background. Goes down relatively thin to medium-bodied. Light caramel and roasted dark malts upfront taste-wise. Kinda earthy with a charred woodsiness in the middle. Mildly spicy. A dry, piney finish that lingers. Kinda blah. Rather disappointing considering this was produced by some of my favorite brewers.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market, Elizabeth City, NC. Cola-like dark brown pour with a thin khaki head. Aroma of light smoke and licorice resembling a stout much more than anything close to a saison. The flavor does have some similarities to a saison, bitterness from the hops and yeast, barnyard and leather, and yet there is the presence of the licorice and smoke from the darker roasted malt. This is much better than my previous attempt at this style but I still don’t think that black saisons will catch on. Meh.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black, with a pinkish tan head. This is an interesting one. Three separate flavors, all mild, combine in a nice balance. There’s the bittersweet roasted malts that give this brew its color, just a bit of smoke (they kept it subtle), and a crisp hoppy yeastiness that indicates a farmhouse style. After the other flavors fade, the faint smokiness remains, which is nice. Mild flavor, even milder aroma... not at all bad.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
It’s a Stone beer. I don’t detect any other brewer input in this. I don’t believe I will ever try another smoked beer again. Tastes a lot like a sour Oaked Bastard. A beer I am not a fan of. This needs to be barreled.

At 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle,SC)
Pours black and opaque, with a very good head.
Flavor: very floral, a bit ’wild’, with Belgian yeast and light and medium roast malts. Medium+ strength. A bit sweet up front; clightly funky and slightly bitter aftertaste.
O: interesting and moderately complex but not my cup of tea.
