COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.

Etched glass bottle. Pours dark brown with tan head. Nose and taste of lemongrass, chocolate bread, yeast, smoked wheat malt and smoked banana peel. Medium body.

Slightly pooey aroma, a bit dodgy. Nice black, small beige head. Nicer taste there’s some pleasant bacon in the roast. Still a bit messy. Finish is quite thin and short. Some nice roast aspects, but still a bit messy generally.

Bottle... Pours clear and dark with a small, fizzy, off-white head. This smells like a misguided pairing of caramel and beef jerkey. Medium to full-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. This tastes a lot like beef jerkey as well... with some herbal notes. Crisp, deeply-roasted finish.

Bottle @ Exira Beer Summit III. Pours a deep brown appearance with a small, cream colored head. Minty spicy, a bit woody smoky, lightly peppery aroma. Burnt chocolate malty, sprucey, slight smoky/tar, light black peppery flavor. Kind of interesting but not my favorite.

12oz bottle. Poured a dark brown, almost black, color with an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of smoke, spiciness, roasty, and some chocolate. Tastes of spices, some smoke, oaky, and some caramel.

Tap at The Salted Pig. Poured a deep near black with medium coffee foam. Good lacing. Nose is sage, black pepper, herbal, mild smoke. Taste is dusty, dry, herbal, toasty, black peppercorn. Lemon tea finish. Interesting black saison. Muted to almost no smoke character makes it past the herbal onslaught.

Thin and watery, not much smoke, not much spice, not much hoppiness. Not sure what they were going for.

Tap at Capone’s. Dark blackish pour with minimal tan head. Nose was roasty malt, some funk, mild rauch, acidic notes. Tasted malty, somewhat funky, with some floral dryness, and hopcitrus. A lot going on here, but perhaps too much.

Bottle that I have had since the release in the fridge (its really been that long?). Pours with a near black hued body and a thick deep brown head with good retention and lace. Aromas are of floral, pine, juniper and some juicy esters, pomegranate, perfumey. Low smoke. Flavors are smokey, lightly bitter, very estery, and some Stone house flavor. Lightly metallic, odd perfumey and some ester that I cant place (spice like...jasmine or something like that). Crisp apple and bartlett pear. Unique (for a saison, and I am not even trying to comment on the "black" and "smoked" characters...the ester profile of the yeast and interplay with the hops is unique). Fuller bodied, off dry, medium carbonation.

12oz bottle. As a fan of smoked beers, and generally all things blackened, this is the most excited I’ve been for a Stone collab since the Mint Chocolate imperial stout. Estery spicy nose, light smoke. Black color, thin tan head, good lace. Yes, I’m really liking the smoked malts here... Work well with the estery saisony notes. Not too smokey, though. It’s light. Maybe I’d prefer even more smoke. Some earthy hops. Medium to bigger body. Softer, smooth carbonation. More dry texture overall. Bitter taste, light spice, bit of savory. Alright... So this is tasty and interesting for sure, but I was kind of hoping to be blown away by a collaboration between these heavyweights. The last black saison I had was the Friendship Brew, and I’d say that this is marginally better than that was
