3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pour: Pours a dark brown. Holding it up to the light it turns a dark red. Poured with about a finger of head. Head is tan with a slight orange
Smell: Smell is a classic Saison. Floral notes a hint of smoke. Rose water. Green Vegitable. Black Pepper. Sweet malts with just a slight hop aroma. It also has that strong yeasty smell that comes through on a good
Taste: The taste starts out with a sweet malt then builds quickly into a smoked meat taste. (Not in a bad way) After a few sips the taste calms down and mellows. It starts to let more of its hops out in the mouth then leaves a smoked salty caramel taste on the way down. After drinking the beer for a while the smoked taste dies down and you are left with a tart and hoppy Saison.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 ounce bottle purchased a little over 1.5 years ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($3.99). Pours a dark brown hue with two fingers of tan foam. AROMA of Belgian yeast, chocolate malts, mild citrus, and smoke. FLAVOR of citric hops, lemon iced tea, touch of sourness (not infected), and dark malts which lead into significant and lingering ash/smoke in the finish. Again, a roasty-bitter (rather than hoppy-bitter) and also dry finish with lesser fruity notes of citrus and dark stone fruit. Interesting concept and probably executed well (though I have to question the whole concept of a "black saison"), but there is a lot happening here and the sum is unfortunately not greater than the parts. 3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle... Pours clear and dark with a small, fizzy, off-white head. This smells like a misguided pairing of caramel and beef jerkey. Medium to full-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. This tastes a lot like beef jerkey as well... with some herbal notes. Crisp, deeply-roasted finish.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Upside surprise at a recent Stone Brewery tap take-over in Wellington. First dark beer my better half says she liked - and I thought it was to die for. Deliciously different.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark pour, tan head. Aroma is a hint smokey with typical but much more subtle than usual bready yeasty saison. Distinctly Belgian in flavor with a hint of smoke and a Stone style finish. Pleasure to drink very hard to describe.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle; Pour is murky brown with a fine bubbled khaki head into this glass. Its a one/two finger head and it does retain fairly well here. The nose is bready, roast, fruit esters, with a smokiness present here. The flavor profile is robust roast initial moving to cocoa, modest dark fruits, some minerals, and a touch of chalk. It lacks belgian elements you would want out of the style, with the malt side dominating. It’s not bad per se, and it is a little different, but its not impressive by any means.

At 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle,SC)
Pours black and opaque, with a very good head.
Flavor: very floral, a bit ’wild’, with Belgian yeast and light and medium roast malts. Medium+ strength. A bit sweet up front; clightly funky and slightly bitter aftertaste.
O: interesting and moderately complex but not my cup of tea.

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Well done. The smoke is very subtle. Much lighter of a flavor than I expected upon seeing this dark almost black ale.
