When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity...better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines...dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy...maybe itís best not to even talk about it.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is mild fruity, vague smoked and roasted malty. Mild fruity, light bitter and grapefruity. Vague smoked, almost citric and bitter finish.

Bottle courtesy of ericdevin. Light smoke, tart citrus, very light funk. Deep dark mahogany with a large tan head. Light smoke, roasty malt, brine, some slight funky flavor with a very subtle grassy bitter finish. Light body, moderate carbonation. An OK beer, but definitely not in keeping with the bottle marketing.

Bottle shared at a tasting at our place. Thank you Excellent Little Brother for delivering this bottle! Coke-colour and tan ring, peak, pen ink aroma, sweet with bitter undertones, smooth texture, medium body, a little roasty finish.

Dark amber-brown color, almost opaque. Tiny off-white head. Nose is very light - berries, some caramel, light tobacco. Medium-bodied. Caramel, licorice, toasted smoked ham flavor. Canít find much Saison here. On paper better beer than in reality.

At 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle,SC) Pours black and opaque, with a very good head. Flavor: very floral, a bit íwildí, with Belgian yeast and light and medium roast malts. Medium+ strength. A bit sweet up front; clightly funky and slightly bitter aftertaste. O: interesting and moderately complex but not my cup of tea.

12oz bottle poured into glass. I donít really have too much to say about this beer. Saison...? I guess itís a pretty hoppy saison then. I didnít really enjoy it, but I didnít hate it either. Itís just sort of meh.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large foamy brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was dry and roasty with notes of coffee, anise and floral hops. The flavor was dry, tart, yeasty and roasty with notes of anise, coffee, wood and floral hops. Medium length dry, roasty and floral hop finish. Medium body. Disappointing.

Very dark in the glass with a small head. The nose has dark fruits like plums and cherries with a touch of smoke. The taste has smoke up front then there is some roasted malts. A touch of roasted fruits on the end. Taste falls off pretty quick.

12 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market, Elizabeth City, NC. Cola-like dark brown pour with a thin khaki head. Aroma of light smoke and licorice resembling a stout much more than anything close to a saison. The flavor does have some similarities to a saison, bitterness from the hops and yeast, barnyard and leather, and yet there is the presence of the licorice and smoke from the darker roasted malt. This is much better than my previous attempt at this style but I still donít think that black saisons will catch on. Meh.

These hybrids are getting out of control. Nothing like a saison, not even a hint, but what did expect? More like a light porter.
