33cl bottle shared in a snifter. Pours thick and black with a short-lived tan head which persists as a steady film of brown atop the oily, black liquid. Aroma is strong burnt malts, sweet dark fruits and candy sugar. Taste is powerful alcohol heat (not excessive) with upfront sweet and a quite severe bitterness. As it warms the more subtle nuances begin to emerge with the almost tobacco like earthiness complementing the dark cocoa and very little sweetness to back up the bitter notes. A real winter warmer and one of the better and more extreme imperial stouts I have tried.

Bottle at beerbistro. Aromas of cherry, chocolate, coffee, hint of leather. Very dark with dark tan head. Strong anise flavour, with coffee and chocolate and cherry, hint of smoke. The lingering bitter leather and anise flavour just doesn’t work for me.

Bottle to little tasting snifter, dated 23/2/15. Opaque with mildly retaining wet sand head with loose lacing. Nose of smokey cedar, chocolate, light sweet lactic notes, date, maybe a bit of cinnamon, mocha/toffee, and alcohol. Flavor is more chocolate and dates, coffee essence, oily and sticky, medium soft carb. Really interesting, but this 4 pack will surely not be guzzled. I’ll keep some for holiday occasions.

So... I loved the fresh version of this one, but right now I’m holding a glass of the 2014 vintage in my hand (if the 231:14 bottle marking means what I think it means [day:year]). Blackest black, nice big beige head. After a year in the cellar it developed a powerful tomato juice note in the aroma; never had a beer that smelled like this. I like tomato juice, so it’s a plus, but YMMV. Also hot chocolate undertones; tomato aroma grows weaker as the glass warms up, but still very noticeable. And a bit of a boozy bite and some coconut. Shoe shine. Body: thick, viscous, velvety, heavy. Taste is bitter coffee and roasted malts with hints of soy sauce and molasses. Finish: dark chocolate, but more bitter; greenleaf. Conclusion: still very very good, but would love to do a vertical with the current (2015) vintage.

Appearance: solid, unrelieved black with one finger of dense mocha head diminishing gradually to a thick cap, patchy lacing. (3/5) Aroma: boozy, dark roasty malt, liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, dried cherries. (8/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate-high bitter. (8/10) Palate: full oily body, moderate-low carbonation, lingering boozy finish. (4/5) Massive and boozy. And that name? I seriously started humming “Fairytale of New York” and tearing up. But I’m a soppy drunk, so the double digit ABV probably had something to do with that too… However: Jeppe? Sorry, but Mikkel’s Beer Geek stouts are better. Way better. Feel free to discuss over what I’m sure are incredibly awkward family events. (15/20)
