COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Pours an opaque caramel brown with a very strong aroma to match. Good head for the style. Mouthfeel is substantial. Great earthy-malt backbone with some late bitterness. The alcohol presence is very subdued. Really good beer to sip overnight the course of an evening.

12oz bottle from Savor Market. Deep amber pour with a big frothy light tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, citrus hops, pine. Tastes are leather, cherry, dark fruit, sugar, toffee, chocolate, light spice, vanilla. Little boozy. Very aggressive, but mostly corals all of that into a cohesive whole. Slight earthy bitter late. Worth a go - not sure I needed the 4 pack though.

12 oz. bottle (Jan, '14) into a snifter. Pour is a deep, dense ruby amber with 1 1/2 fingers of off-white/ khaki head. Aroma is intense malts including caramel, toffee, dark fruits, cherries and citrusy hops, with a hint of booze. Taste mirrors the aroma. Big malty bready flavors, heavy in the caramel with cherries and fig. Has some molasses, brown sugar notes as well. Finishes with plenty of bittering hops and some pine. Not a huge booze feel but it's there. The mouth feel is a bit viscous, true to the style. Definitely one of the better American style barley wines I've had Still gonna let the rest of these mellow in the cellar a bit like I do all barley wines.

Keg at Brewdog. I think it was up as ’Mikkeller Freudian Slip’, though I may be wrong. Dark red / brown, small scummy head. Aroma - sweet toffee, pine. Body is medium, rich and foamy, low carbonation. Taste is semisweet toffee, pine, rosewater, toothpaste with orange squash. Alcohol is well hidden. Very similar to the Stone Old Guardian I just had, but nowhere near as sweet.

Bottle thanks to Matt. Pours a dark brown with beige head that lasts. The aroma is candy sugar, oak, and booze. Flavor is similar with nice sweetness. Boozy, good.

(bottle - 12 oz) Copper pour with a thin tan head. Hoppy and peppery aroma with a lot of caramel malts underneath. Flavor starts off with a very sweet and malty taste, almost too sweet, but then is balanced out quickly by the hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden and bitterness lingers for a while.

Pours reddish amber with a good sized dense beige head. The aroma has bready malt, English earthy yeast, woodiness, dry caramel and underlying hints of candy. Fairly full bodied with sweet caramel malt, sugary aspects, very English yeastiness (even though this says its an American barleywine) and ridiculously heavy malt. The finish shows some earthy hoppiness, but still remains malt forward. This bottle is about three months old, so I was expecting a bit more of an aggressive hop presence due to the description. Still nice though.

Keg at the Euston Tap, 24/06/14. Dark amber/chestnut brown with a moderate light tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is light booze, sticky pine, hoppy waftings, rich stoned fruit notes, bread pudding, caramel. Taste comprises dark fruit mash, dates, prunes, caramel fudge, hop presence, fruit cake mix. Full bodied, fine carbonation, lightly warming booze in the close but the alcohol is kept well in check. Decent hopped up barley wine.
