Draft at Torst- lovely black with blood red highlights around the glass- The barrel aspects meld wonderfully with the underlying deliciously smooth stout- strong, sweet- yet not cloying- with the big roasted tones balancing everything out and the port mellowing what is left with some merlot/vineous notes- my only complaint was an unpleasant lacker/medicinal/pheonlic type aromatic at the way end when it was pretty warm- note, torst served it at proper temp, warmer to begin with- but thats it- otherwise, wonderful.

Pitch black and opaque with a 1.5 finger dark mocha head that has very good retention, only slowly fading into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Impressive for the style and high ABV.
Very vinous with a strong port barrel character along with dark fruit sweetness and dry oak that slightly overpowers the complex malt character of the base beer. There’s still a sweet and roasted malt presence with hints of burnt toast, dark cocoa and robust coffee followed by dessert-like chocolate malt sweetness. Nice port barrel presence but I prefer the malt crush of the regular version.
Full bodied with a strong port barrel presence. Dry and vinous with lots of toasted oak and sweet, vinous dark fruit flavor. Lots of grape, dark cherry, currant and other dark berries along with a prominent toast oak flavor. Underneath, there is a nice balance of roast and silky malt sweetness. Some smoke along with burnt malt, coffee grinds, oatmeal and bitter cacoa along with sweet chocolate and lactic creaminess. Pretty complex and the port character gives this beer another dimension but the barrel aging takes away what I like most from the base beer. Good but not as interesting or flavorful as the regular version.

Bottle. Cotteridge Wines. Been in the cellar for 18 months. Shared with the missus on our 15th Wedding Anniversary. Clear, dark brown. Thinnest halo of tan head. The beer equivalent of walking down the aisle to a Nick Cave tune (Into My Arms), then walking back up to James’ Millionaire. Or summat. Heady, and fruity, and beautifully smooth. Missus isn’t too fussed by it. I could drink myself silly on it.
