Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

Aroma of plums and dark fruits. Taste of plums, raisins, dark dried fruits, chocolate. Very well balanced. I dont get coffee or any roasted characters so I would more categorize this is an imperial porter. A good imperial porter!

Bottle. An opaque black beer, with a large, frothy, mostly lasting, brown head. The aroma is heavily malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate, fudge, coffee, molasses), with notes of brown sugar, prunes, dried figs, licorice, alcohol. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lighty bitter. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, very long finish with moderate bitterness, moderately alcoholic. Splendid. Yes, extremely sweet and sugary, but splendid... It’s got the correct amount of final bitterness and booze, it’s got a complex, powerful and rich aroma and a marvellous creamy mouthfeel. It feels big, of course, but I drank the whole 33 cl at an almost record breaking pace. One of the best from Northern Europe.

UPDATED: JUL 7, 2013 Black, beautiful tan head. Thick and viscous - one of the biggest mouthfeels I’m yet to experience. Aroma is choc fudge malts. Taste is thick brownie - roasty, sweet, chocolate, mocha, mousse and yeast. Nice finish; not too ridiculous. Overall, great imperial stout.

Bottle, 04/12/2013. Pours nearly black, thick, with dense medium tan head, fades to the surface leaving a fine ring of lacing round the glass. Aroma is rich chocolate, plums and dark berries, sweet molasses, balanced near the end by the bitter character of charred roast malts, bit of booze. Taste is sweet dark fruits drizzled in chocolate, molasses with roasted coffee bitterness, dark chocolate lingers into the aftertaste. Full creamy palate, thick, like approaching Double Black viscosity. Big, sweet and intense in a lot of ways, but pulls it off nicely.

330ml bottle from Archive Beer Boutique. Wow, it’s like pouring oil into your glass, thick and black with a brown layer of foam. Big bold aromas of aniseed, chocolate and vanilla. I think that this would have to be the thickest beer I have ever had. Full rich creamy smooth velvet mouthfeel. Long alcohol burn in the aftertaste. Definitely one to take your time with. Would be great with a cigar.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with just a trace of thin, fizzy tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, light vanilla, oak, raisins, plums, spicy hops, and booze. Flavor is roasted malts forward with supporting espresso, vanilla, oak, dark fruit esters, earthy and floral hops, and light smoke; dry finish with some sweetness. Medium/full body and low carbonation.

From a bottle. Pours dark burgundy opaque brown with minimal brown head. Rates like raisins, dates, plums. Rich, sweet, slightly sour, slightly bitter. Smells like dried and fermenting fruits. Medium body and high carbonation.

330ml bottle pours a deep black color with a finger of light brown head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is dominated by dark fruits (wine grapes and/or raisins?) with hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is a dark fruity and chocolate malty sweetness with a light roasted grain bitterness and an alcohol burn in the finish. Medium to heavy body with mild carbonation. A very well done stout and recommended for others to check it out.

This one poured a very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma was herbal hops, dark roast, smoke, and dark chocolate. Flavor was similar, very thick and chewy fudge layered with smoke and dark roast. Similar to expedition.
