Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

Black as night with a thick tan head. Thick and viscuous when pouring. The nose shows an intense roast and coffee ground character. This is loaded with intensity and bitterness. Espresso roast with some eventual black and blue fruit emerging. Rich, thick mouthfeel. Long, bitter finish.

Bottle, thanks Trevor. Pure black pour, rich gorgeous pour, heavy alcohol and crazy red-brown head. Smoke, applewood, espresso roast. Big coffee jolt, big wood, sweet kick. Huge sweet-complexity. Thick, meaty oatmeal. Head reminds me of Dark Lord, and the body is nearly as heavy and rich. Red alc legs on the glass. Incredibly good

Bottle… This beer rocks!… Pours thick and black with a small, creamy, khaki head. Great retention. The aroma is a carbonic tapestry of deeply roasted malts, caramel, chocolate chips and pouch tobacco with a nutty undercurrent of singed almonds and pistachios. Full-bodied and velvety with a chewy mouthfeel and feather-soft carbonation. The flavor is of bittersweet chocolate, charcoal and burnt marshmallow. Also, a good bit boozy. Finishes scorched, fairly bitter and quite warm going down. World class imperial stout!

Bottle from Blue Dog. Pours thick jet black with 2-finger dense dark brown head. Nose is very complex; a medley of dark fruit, gingerbread, chocoff, hops. Tastes thick, rich, oily, with heavy fudgy chocolate, astringent hops, coffee, figgy fruit, and a very dense, smooth, and rich finish. This one is a powerhouse, and very complex, but more Mike Tyson than Sugar Ray Leonard, and that’s just fine for a libation like this.

Bottle. Pours *pitch* black, with a deep, burnt mocha head. Really well blended notes of chocolate, charred oak, tobacco, molasses, dark fruits, and candi sugar. Thick as all get out -- this one is downright viscous. Flavor keeps all those notes, wonderfully blended, covers the alcohol incredibly well, and tobacco and smoke come through in the aftertaste. Couldn’t have more than about 4 or 5 oz. of it -- but for what it is, this is *damn* tasty.

Bottle. Black with a creamy medium brown head. Nice strong chocolate, cherry, and amber incense aroma (which seems so prevalent of some northern European stouts). Very bitter dark chocolate, coffee, cherry, citrus, and amber taste. Very thick, velvety, bright palate. Excellent, but it might need a little more Jesus.

Aroma is dark malts, vinous notes and a strong hint of alcohol. The flavor is malts, dark fruit, earthiness and an alcoholic finish.

330. Pours jet black with a towering, thick, viscous burnt tan head. Lots of sticky lace. Big heavy coffe and chocolate nose, a nice mix of bitter and sweet chocolate notes along with the complex coffeeness. Thick sticky body with sluggish carb. Big roasty totasty mid palate with coffee and chocolate everywhere. What’s best about this beer is that there’s a coherence to all of it; it’s not just a mess of big impy notes all swirling around together. It’s pleasant and pleasurable to drink, and everything’s working together harmoniously. Might have to lay in a few bottles of this one, even at these prices. Cheers!

11.2 oz bottle. Pours a thick pitch black color with a thick and large brown head. Aroma of bitter dark chocolate, molasses, burnt sugar, fudge and dark fruit. Taste of bitter dark chocolate, burnt sugar, molasses, dark fruit and hints of fudge. Superb.
