Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2012 Gift from SJ. I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype , and it pretty much did. What stood out for me was the rich, chocolate and roast aromas. The flavors were complex, but interestingly blended. Some bitter dark chocolate, dark fruit, citrus, coffee, and figs. Very good.

Yep. This is top notch. Had to break the bank after reading some of these reviews. Motor oil black with a decent dark brown head. Pretty indeed. Huge roasty aroma full of chocolate, licorice, molasses, coffee and vanilla. Long roasty bittersweet finish. Lots of roast, mocha, vanilla and caramel. Big viscous mouthfeel, oily and slick with creamy carbonation. Delivered on all accounts. Big but not overly sweet, balanced and complex.

Black as midnight pour, thick tan head, nose and flavor of bitter chocolate, coffee, smoked meat, cedar shavings, roast, graham cracker, clove, nutmeg, sandalwood, mandarin orange, tangerine, strawberry, raspberry, apricot, plum, tobacco, leather, raisin, fig, date, and prune. Insanely complex with an absolute motor oil consistency. Even bigger than Dark Lord, and far more balanced and delicious with an eternal syrupy, bittersweet finish. OMG! My new favorite RIS, hands down.

330ml bottle. Solid, pitch black, big brown head. Massive, roasted aroma, malt, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, dark cherries, candied sugar, licorice, almost like a fortified wine (Banyuls?). Sweet, full bodied, medium to high bitterness, creamy CO2. Thick, silky, massive taste, loads of dark fruit and roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, licorice, coffee beans, smoke, ashes, cloves. Long, sweet finish, ridiculously complex. (2012-06-26)

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with a slight very dark tan head. Aroma of herby/earthy things with coffee and burnt malt. Full bodied. Flavor hits strongly with celery. Backed by chocolate, coffee and burnt malt. Quite unusual. Finishes less than dry. Good in a different way.

Bottle from Beer Revolution. Pours dark brown with a late arriving light brown head and a nutty celery and treacle aroma .There is a sweet chocolate flavor with a celery and bitter chocolate finish. A very complex and strange flavor, but it works pretty well.

Served from a 12 oz bottle from Bottlecraft. The appearance is a oily ruby black with a perfect deep brown head. The nose oozes with hot gooey fudge chocolate browns with caramel, smoked sausauge, milk chocolate, and whoppers. The flavors enter with a lot of smoked meats but the sweet rich chocolate truffles with confection sugar and brown sugar sprinkled in there. Also some peanut butter hints. There is also some dark dried fruits and more smoked meat in the finish. The mouth is full bodied with a moderate creaminess. A long sticky finish. Great beer for sure!

Black as night with a thick tan head. Thick and viscuous when pouring. The nose shows an intense roast and coffee ground character. This is loaded with intensity and bitterness. Espresso roast with some eventual black and blue fruit emerging. Rich, thick mouthfeel. Long, bitter finish.

Bottle, thanks Trevor. Pure black pour, rich gorgeous pour, heavy alcohol and crazy red-brown head. Smoke, applewood, espresso roast. Big coffee jolt, big wood, sweet kick. Huge sweet-complexity. Thick, meaty oatmeal. Head reminds me of Dark Lord, and the body is nearly as heavy and rich. Red alc legs on the glass. Incredibly good
