Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

11.2oz bottle. Pours pitch black with a small but thick mocha head that sticks to the sides of the glass on the way down. Aroma is big on bakers chocolate, coffee and caramelized sugar. There is also a bit of dark fruit but the heavy roastiness of the black malts stand out above the sweetness. Taste is like a big thick coffee, chocolate milkshake. Some sweetness, lots of roast, hints of espresso beans. Bitterness from the roast and semi-sweet chocolate linger in the finish. Mouthfeel is absolutely decadent, like a milkshake. Thick, smooth with decent carbonation and heavily roasted. This is an excellent imperial stout, one of the best I’ve have in a long time. There is a great balance of roast with chocolate and a seriously thick feel. Works on almost every level.

Bottle at tasting with Marc from Brill. Opaque, black liquid with small tan head. Lots of brown lacing. Smells of biscuits, licorice, chocolate, ash, uncooked bacon (umami, lots of umami) and black patent malt. Very savory/meaty. Taste is light to medium sweet with medium to high bitterness and notes of chocolate and a really umami feel. The bitterness reminds me of the kind that you experience in espresso. Full bodied with light carbonation and super sticky mouthfeel. In a way delicious, but way too savory for my liking. Really split the tasting group in a hate/love way.

UPDATED: JUN 12, 2012 My 300th Danish beer rating. Bottle bought @ Fanø Brughus. Tasted several times at Fanø and CBC prior to this rating. Pours death black with a deep brown head. The aroma bursts of dark malts, roast and fruity notes. Chocolate, vanilla, freshly baked brownie, hard roasted malts, liquorice. As head forms and some CO2 is released, a fresh hoppiness comes forward, which isn’t present if you have no head on it. Grassy and a bit citrusy hop aromas come off. What strikes me about both the aroma and taste of this beer, is a strong and very tasteful blueberry note, sort of a product of the complex malts and the fruity yeast esters. Also notes of tiramisu and vanilla. Lovely! The taste is awesome - pretty much the same as a creamy fudgy brownie made with intense dark chocolate. So damn complex - chocolate, sweet liquorice, blueberries, chocolate syrup, ganache, dark sugar, roasted malts and a refreshing hop bitterness in the finish. Notes of vanilla, black currants and dark grapes. The texture is heavenly - smooth carbonation, huge thick viscous body, sticky on the lips. Mother of tapdancing FUCK this is good.
