Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

UPDATED: APR 28, 2016 Tap@Taphouse. Pours black with small Brown head. Aroma of green fruit and smoke, with a winey character. Taste is sweet, with roasted malt, dried fruit, molasses, chocolate and vanilla. Taste ends in sweet, complex and chocolate taste. Mouthfeel is rich with some alcohol. A bit too sweet for my taste in imp.

Catch up rating from Saturday’s RIS bottle share. As it turned to Sunday morning, we all turned to Jesus, even more Jesus. Not much else to add to this one, a top notch RIS, thick, chewy body, tons of chocolate notes, woody roast grains, and a pleasant warmth in the chest. All spells a superlative drink. Cheers!

22oz bottle from Windsor Hy-Vee, in a Sam Smith pint glass. Mouth-watering aromas of semi-sweet chocolate, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup and raisins. Pours a distinctively opaque oily black with a finger of milky black head that dissipates to a thin layer of bubbles in a couple of minutes, with a ribbon of foamy bubbles clinging to the wall of the glass in an attractive silky ripple pattern. Roast coffee and raisins up front followed by a rich chocolatey sweetness with a long pleasantly roasty finish that flirts with bourbon barrel oaky woodiness at the very end. Full-bodied, a little weighty and light on carbonation, possibly due to bottle age. Sweet, mouthcoating and mildly coffee astringent. Another respectable imperial stout from Evil Twin that embraces the roasty character of dark beer without allowing it to overpower the way so many do. Really like to try this one on tap or newly bottled to see if that offers a little more carbonation to manage the weight of the beer a little better. Still not a bad beer by any measure. Skal!
