Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2013 Bottled. Pours a viscous black color with a medium plus sized reddish tan head that lasts with very spotty lacing. The aroma is big roasted malts, chocolate fudge, dark fruits, coffee, molasses with some alcohol at the edges. The flavor is big roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, molasses, dark fruits (cherry , blueberry, raisin) and some alcohol. Considering the 12% abv, this is pretty smooth and drinkable. Full bodied creamy mouth feel. Another excellent Imperial stout from Evil Twin.

16 ounce can from Badger Spirits in Janesville, WI, consumed at cellar temp from a Maudite glass. Totally opaque, thick, viscous motor-oil pour with a dark maple head that nearly fills the glass and subsides reluctantly...deep, dark-chocolate, vanilla in the nose, hints of pepper and tarragon, quite roasty-toasty, could be a bit more forward but pleasant enough - and this is the first Impy I’ve had in months, so I’m happy in any case with the intensity that there is, shouldn’t spoil for more I suppose....later on a bit of cherry and licorice develop, this is getting nice...on the tongue it’s all toasted/burnt malts at the front, with a sherry character developing eventually, a bit of lactic sourness towards the finish, plenty of chocolate throughout and a warming, milky texture as it goes down. Overall this is quite lovely and reminds me of what really attracted me to big beers originally...and the alcohol is barely apparent apart from that warming environment. It’s nearly a hundred degrees outside, but with the thunder roaring and the A/C on and a firebrand yelling on TV, somehow only a beer like this works in these waning days of July.

Bottle, 65cl. Opaque dark brown with a creamy to minimal brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, dried fruits, banana, alcohol. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Thick and creamy. Medium to heavy sweet, medium to heavy bitter. Harsh coffee and alcohol flavors. Not the most drinkable, but delicious, heavy and complex.

Bottle, 650ml. A dark beer with a small brown head that fades away almost completely. Aroma is of coffee, alcohol, lactose and dried fruits. Taste is medium sweet and medium to heavy bitter. Robust bodied, oily and with some carbonation. Thick and with a finish of dried fruits. Aftertaste of roasted coffee.

Draft. Pours a medium thick, poorly retained, tiny bubbled, beige head, with no lacing, over a clear almost still black (SRM 35) body......nose is multiple dried fruits including plum, raisin, cocoa, chocolate, light coffee, molasses, brown sugar, light her hops......taste is heavily sweet, with dreid fruits including plum raisin, fig, chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, molasses, brown sugar, finishing with mild hops bitterness......mouth feel, heavy sticky body, high alcohol warmth, slight carbonation. This is a very heavy, utterly sweet, rich on the dessert end of the style. The sweetness is a bit too dominant, and there is no umami as is found in the best. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7

It’s so good. It’s soooo good. And now that it’s out in sixteen ounce cans, it’s perfect. Pours jet black from the can with a huge mountain of chocolate cream brown head. The aroma is very rich, strong, bitter baker’s chocolate and a little coffee. The flavor is huge on that rich, bitter, very strong roasted malt/chocolate thing. Relentlessly so. Coffee, a little anise, strong, bitter roasted finish. The big ABV is only a ghost on the aftertaste. Ranks with Ten Fidy and Undead Party Crasher and my other favorite IRS’s.

Can to shaker. Oily black in the glass with a fat lasting foamy dark chocolate brown head. Nose is heavy charred roasted. Palate is intense dark chocolate, dark roasted malt with sweet warm finish. Really well balanced. Yummy.

Tap @Zakl?teRewiry @Hevelka. Pitch black with thick tan head. Beautifully dark. Roasted aromas mix with plums, coffee, chocolate, caramel, butterscotch. Oily and thick, very satisfying fullness. Sweet but not overwhelmingly, the alcohol is there and gives it a warming feeling. Overall a great beer. Will get back to it whenever I get a chance.
