Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Had the night before i headed to my first GABF .. . deep brown .. mild foam .. . rich malt, boozy bread, and dark toffee .. . solid mouth and a mild sweet boozy finish .. . a fantastic barleywine, would do well in a barrel .. . . If you tell me to make myself at home, I’m going to pee in your trash can, it’s what I do.

355ml bottle. Amber pour, soapy off-whit head. Scent is booze, perfume, caramel soy, slight balsamic, bread. Flavor is burnt sugar, booze, medium/persisting bitterness, caramel, some floral herbal hops, not really my type of barleywine, just too many off-notes.

pours a cloudy dark burgundy, sediment floating in my snifter with a thin white head. aroma is fantastic. Burnt sugar, dark fruit, molasses and light resin. Flavor is more intense on the hops than you get from the aroma. light citrus, candied sugars, plum, resinous. full bodied. oily/slick mouth feel. Big dry bitter finish. Fantastic.

Poured into a tulip glass. Cloudy mahogany in colour with a quickly fading off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, citrus, dried apricot, and peach nectar. Flavour is hoppy grapefruit, burnt malts, brown sugar, peach, and spices. Wonderful barley wine!

Low pfffft as the cap came off and then lowly, doughy malts shine on first whiff. At cellar temperaturee and into a stunted tulip it pour wonderfully; viscous but with a good head of foam that is tight and wielding. The body a hazy, deep chestnut and seemingly still. ’American Barley Wine’, why is that on the label. This is classic English. Boozy, sherry, almond and toffee notes dominate the heated and spiced, vinous and plump fruit nose. Palate is simiar. Smooth meets oily mouthfeel; rounded and bountiful in spice, alcohol and malt. There is a little twigginess to it hinting at dry hopping or the like but this is all malt and yeast. Slow sipping caution. It does go down easier than my brain could function. Its length fades but persist at another mouthful. Though I like it, it definitely lacks in the complex, sit and ponder, department. A rare for me at liking Evil Twin, but I do like this one. Keep it simple!!! (12fl.Oz, bottled 12/03/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Dark re-amber color, hazy, with large creamy head. At first ot has the aroma of a fruity Barley Wine, but it turns a bit into something more dusty and with traces of vegetables. Good body strength; the mouthfeel is very smooth, for the style; the flavor is based too much on dark caramel, and not enough clean malt; too bitter, maybe with some chicory bitterness too, and a fair amount of hop resins, and some bitter orange; high alcohol perception.
Hop-lacerating American Strong Ale, chaotic; I don’t share the purpose.

Sample at SBWF 2014. Reddish/brown with a small head. On the sweet side with malt, dried fruit, hops, grapefruit, some warming alcohol. The body was thick. A pleasant one to sip.

Bottle@nkbar. Amber red, unfiltered. Light plummy rich deep caramel malts, some herbal hops. Full bodied, quite bitter, herbal. Ok barley wine, but not the best. Very bitter, bit harsh. Flavourful though.
