Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Bottle shared with (and courtasy of) The Bergen tasting crew, and Gunnar. Has a hazy dark brown colour with a medium beige head. Lots of hops in a fruity aroma with the addition of dried fruit, pine and rye. A lot of malt in the flavour and more powerful hops as well, almost herbal with grass and pine. The mouthfeel is soft and slick, and has a medium bitterness. A very nice ale! I also understand that there’s a huge difference between an English barley wine and an American one. This is closer to a DIPA.

A rich golden hue and a poignant nose, featuring caramel malt, booze and pithy hops. This is a massive BW with all the element I appreciate - a rich toffee malt body, fresh piney hops, a hint of nuts and popping dark berries. The flavours blend well, but are distinct and fresh. The body is appropriately rich and thick and the soft carbonation helps support this luxurious barley wine.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber. This is a big sticky hot mess. Really, burnt sugar, alcohol heat and warmth, raisin, toffee. So much sugar and alcohol.

Bottle. Nice dark fruit and caramel aroma with a slight hint of piney hops. Pours cloudy caramel colored with a thin off-white head with minimal retention and some lacing. Starts with caramel malt and dark fruit sweetness with a rich full body. Finishes dry with a piney hop bitterness at the end that melds with the dark fruit sweetness on the palate. Pretty good barleywine, but would have liked it better without the sharp hop bitterness.

Evil Twin’s Freudian Slip also clocks in at 10%. It pours a plum red/Amber with a head that was gone in the blink of an eye. The nose is rich malt & stone fruits + hints of pear. Med-light bodied with a somewhat silky texture. The taste is boozy, bitter at first, fruity then gives you some malty sweetness. The beer is about 8 months old though which could explain the lack of hoppiness.

@ Basunen 15-8-1: lite småhet och maltig men lämnar ingen större spår. Absolut inte imponerande.

caramel, butterscotch, resin, citrus, spruce, grapefruit, alcohol, lemon peel, a big beer, lots of hops, lots of malts. Copper/ruby colour, medium beige head, lacing. Big bite, heavy sweetness, lightly salty, a bit hot on the alcohol, it also has a bit of a medicinal quality to it. Fullbodied, sticky feel, soft carbonation, bitter and warming finish. Enjoyable, but the medicinal quality is a bit disturbing.

Beautfil clear dark copper with some ruby hues and a medium, creamy, beige head. Aroma is ripe fruit, fruity cake, some raisins, very nice. Flavor is same ripe fruit and cake with some dark sugar and dark crystal malts. Medium to full palate, easy to drink and alcohol very well hidden.
