Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Bottle shared with (and courtasy of) The Bergen tasting crew, and Gunnar. Has a hazy dark brown colour with a medium beige head. Lots of hops in a fruity aroma with the addition of dried fruit, pine and rye. A lot of malt in the flavour and more powerful hops as well, almost herbal with grass and pine. The mouthfeel is soft and slick, and has a medium bitterness. A very nice ale! I also understand that there’s a huge difference between an English barley wine and an American one. This is closer to a DIPA.

(Evil Twin Freudian Slip) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 10.3% Deep red colour on the body with a small tan head, good density and retention. Aroma has plenty of hops, anise -reminding of sambuca- , red fruits, light orange peel. Taste has also red fruits, anise, alcohol, sambuca or ouzo reminding flavours especially on the afinish and aftertaste, orange peel, light citrus. Medium body, good carbonation, sticky palate. Quite good, interesting barley wine.

Bottle. Heather and I picked these up at DeLock’s in Munster after a quick trip to 3F’s (side-note: bad idea visiting the brewery a week before DLD). Coppery brown pour, medium off-white head, nose is candy sugar, maple, vanilla, dried fruit (dates, figs and prunes), marshmallow. Mouth is medium-full, but not sticky like some, definitely drier than I like my barleywines (Heather agreed), but tasted an awful lot like everything you’d find in good candy minus the sugary part -- caramel, toffee, vanilla, maple, brown sugar, then some lingering bitterness. Overall this was good, although I’d like it better a touch sweeter. Just hit 1,234 ratings... like an alcoholic Sesame Street lesson in counting. Hopefully my liver holds out til 12,345 ;-P

Dark ruby, clear, maybe bit hazy. Small 2 fingers foam. Spare lacing. Sweet malts aroma, caramel, prunes, wine. Deep bitter-sweet taste. Medium body, thick and oily. Sticky. Pleasant, dry finish, long lasting. Warm. Excellent beer Bottling: 335:2014

Mooie barley wine derhalve.

(33 cl bottle in wine glass.) It pours beautifully in amber with a thin white head. Both aroma and taste is subtle for a barley wine, but elegant. Probably not as sweet as the ones I’ve tried prior to this one which is refreshing. Have been bracing myself to try this because of the sweetness present in some, this is more slick though. More hop oriented than malt I’d say. Good refreshing bitterness.

Slightly hazy dark amber color with beige head. Aroma is sweet and malty with intense alcohol. Taste is quite bitter up-front with some roasted malts in the background. Alcohol is quite present in the taste too. Medium body and carbonation. Really bitter and alcoholic barleywine, very unbalanced.

Sharp, piney, slightly floral, vaguely fruity hops are met with a cascade of sweet malts, with some molasses, dark fruits, and caramel. Strikes an impressive balance between malt and hop, "balance" not implying "restraint." Substantially built, thick on the tongue with good carbonation and a bit of a sting. Better than I thought it would be.
