Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Bottle shared with (and courtasy of) The Bergen tasting crew, and Gunnar. Has a hazy dark brown colour with a medium beige head. Lots of hops in a fruity aroma with the addition of dried fruit, pine and rye. A lot of malt in the flavour and more powerful hops as well, almost herbal with grass and pine. The mouthfeel is soft and slick, and has a medium bitterness. A very nice ale! I also understand that there’s a huge difference between an English barley wine and an American one. This is closer to a DIPA.

Hazy brown, light beige froth. Strong hoppy and caramely aroma. Flavour has syrupy caramel and intense, rough and alcoholic bitterness. Nice sipper.

Bottle. Brown color. Not especially interesting for Evil Twin. Brown color. Sweet, some hops, dry in the finish. Carbonation is low. Serviceable but nothing new.

Evil Twin’s take on the barley wine style, with densely structured, egg-white, creamy head retaining surprisingly well and a beautiful, deep coppery red amber colour, clear but hazy and a tad more brownish with deposit. Rich, sweetly perfumed aroma of candied orange, Belgian chocolates, overripe sweet cherries, chocolate cake batter, brownies, kahlua, black pepper, honey, strong candied figs, cognac, red curry, wet leather, saffron, gingerbread, orange water and something vaguely haemoglobin-like. Rounded, sweet onset of candied oranges and cherries, deep sourish accent of redcurrant, softish carbo, thick but smooth and oily malt body, very caramelly, bit honeyish, gaining a mildly toasted bittersweet edge in the end along with some peppery, leafy hop bitterishness and a slightly astringent but mostly warming (and charming) liqueurish or brown rhum-like alcohol effect, as expected from a barley wine. Clever English style barley wine with no obvious mistakes, rich and enticing, exquisite as a slow sipper on a cold evening. I wonder what this would taste like in next year’s winter, as I am convinced this has great ageing potential.

33 cl @ home. Pours reddish amber with an off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma and flavour are caramel, dried fruit, and pine - with a dry finish.

shared with Bierle; aromas of dark caramel, red, dried berries and darker fruits, marshmallows, oak, vanilla, quite Bourbon-esque really with quite an alcohol whiff. More dark caramel malts in taste, some mango, an alcohol burn, finishing dry with quite a brutal hop bitterness - especially for a Barley Wine. interesting, but a bit unnecessary. Has more of a strong, overly strong, Red Ale. Would have liked it more as a Red Ale.

Bottled. 15cl sample. The aroma has caramel, some orange, dried fruit and biscuits. Bit hazy, copper coloured beer with a thin head. The taste is light bitter and has malty biscuit and toffee sweetness. Medium - full bodied. Nice.

Aroma is...toasted malt, sweet malt, caramel, toffee, weird. Appearance is rust orange, off white head, lots of sediment. Taste is sweet malt, light toffee, caramel notes, light overall. Mouthfeel is medium body, medium carbonation, a bit of booze aftertaste. Overall, this is not real impressive.
