3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared with (and courtasy of) The Bergen tasting crew, and Gunnar. Has a hazy dark brown colour with a medium beige head. Lots of hops in a fruity aroma with the addition of dried fruit, pine and rye. A lot of malt in the flavour and more powerful hops as well, almost herbal with grass and pine. The mouthfeel is soft and slick, and has a medium bitterness. A very nice ale! I also understand that there’s a huge difference between an English barley wine and an American one. This is closer to a DIPA.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a nice reddish amber with lasting off-white head and good lacing with tons of sediment. This bottle is ~5 months old. Aroma initially is stale hops, but upon further review this might be intended since it’s not that strong. Beyond that, some earthy caramel and molasses. Taste is thick with rich, boozy, earthy toffee malts and dark fruit, quickly surpassed by a drying, resinous hops that bring some moderate bitterness. Ends sticky, rich, and dry, almost a bit too salty and sour. Not one of my favorite barleywines.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Publick House.
Comes to the table a slightly hazy deep amber/brown color with a decent sized head. Sweet caramel and brown sugar maltiness obliterated by a solid shot of earthy pine and resin. The flavor is sweet and a bit gritty with a solid earthy pine offset with lots of sweet caramel fruit and brown sugar with just touches of chocolate. Medium to thick body with alight to moderate level of carbonation. Nice barleywine, but seems like it needs a bit of time for the flavors to meld a little better.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours an opaque caramel brown with a very strong aroma to match. Good head for the style. Mouthfeel is substantial. Great earthy-malt backbone with some late bitterness. The alcohol presence is very subdued. Really good beer to sip overnight the course of an evening.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle from Savor Market. Deep amber pour with a big frothy light tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, citrus hops, pine. Tastes are leather, cherry, dark fruit, sugar, toffee, chocolate, light spice, vanilla. Little boozy. Very aggressive, but mostly corals all of that into a cohesive whole. Slight earthy bitter late. Worth a go - not sure I needed the 4 pack though.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle (Jan, '14) into a snifter. Pour is a deep, dense ruby amber with 1 1/2 fingers of off-white/ khaki head. Aroma is intense malts including caramel, toffee, dark fruits, cherries and citrusy hops, with a hint of booze. Taste mirrors the aroma. Big malty bready flavors, heavy in the caramel with cherries and fig. Has some molasses, brown sugar notes as well. Finishes with plenty of bittering hops and some pine. Not a huge booze feel but it's there. The mouth feel is a bit viscous, true to the style. Definitely one of the better American style barley wines I've had Still gonna let the rest of these mellow in the cellar a bit like I do all barley wines.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Keg at Brewdog. I think it was up as ’Mikkeller Freudian Slip’, though I may be wrong. Dark red / brown, small scummy head. Aroma - sweet toffee, pine. Body is medium, rich and foamy, low carbonation. Taste is semisweet toffee, pine, rosewater, toothpaste with orange squash. Alcohol is well hidden. Very similar to the Stone Old Guardian I just had, but nowhere near as sweet.
