Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

D’ampolla.

A rich golden hue and a poignant nose, featuring caramel malt, booze and pithy hops. This is a massive BW with all the element I appreciate - a rich toffee malt body, fresh piney hops, a hint of nuts and popping dark berries. The flavours blend well, but are distinct and fresh. The body is appropriately rich and thick and the soft carbonation helps support this luxurious barley wine.

Bottle 330ml @ Geokkjer
Pours hazy amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, dried fruits, alcohol and citrus. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long warm, malty, caramel, dried fruity and bitter finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber. This is a big sticky hot mess. Really, burnt sugar, alcohol heat and warmth, raisin, toffee. So much sugar and alcohol.

Evil Twin’s Freudian Slip also clocks in at 10%. It pours a plum red/Amber with a head that was gone in the blink of an eye. The nose is rich malt & stone fruits + hints of pear. Med-light bodied with a somewhat silky texture. The taste is boozy, bitter at first, fruity then gives you some malty sweetness. The beer is about 8 months old though which could explain the lack of hoppiness.

Bottle. Nice dark fruit and caramel aroma with a slight hint of piney hops. Pours cloudy caramel colored with a thin off-white head with minimal retention and some lacing. Starts with caramel malt and dark fruit sweetness with a rich full body. Finishes dry with a piney hop bitterness at the end that melds with the dark fruit sweetness on the palate. Pretty good barleywine, but would have liked it better without the sharp hop bitterness.

Draft @ Funky Buddha Boca. Fairly cloudy amber, with a thick caramel head. Rich foresty aroma - caramel and hops like a 2 year old Bigfoot. Has a big, chewy character with quite a bit of bitterness but lots of malts, rich balanced earthy character.

330 ml bottle @ Micro Bar, Reykjavik
Copper to amber colored clear beer with little blonde head. Arom,a has caramel, resin, pine, butterscotch and lingonberry jam. Flavor has caramel, berries and bitterness. Quite full palate with strong carbonation and bitterness. Finish has mild bitterness and alcohol. Aftertaste has also mostly alcohol with caramel, bitterness and cranberry. Too much booze.

Butla, 0,33. Barwa bordowo-brunatna.
