Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Pours deep redish brown with a firm, staying, creamy, white to off-white head. Aroma has dark chocolate, raisins, plums, apricot, light vinious, somewhat resiny. Medium carbonation, fine creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has good sweetness with firm bitterness. Apricot, peach, citrus. Deep milky chocolate, grainy, some cocoa-milk, raisins, vinious and warming. Soft roasted in the finish. Lovely beer.

Bottle. Dark orange-brown color with small head. Aroma has lots-O-alcohol and then plums, candis fruits, toffee just like most barley wines. The taste is much the same as the barleywine aromas and hoppy bitterness. Also a bitter grapefruit-like finish. As it warmed I got past the alcohol and into the other flavors.

33 cl bottle, Calgary, AB, Canada via Zyn. Dense brown appearance, small head. Interesting aroma, prune, cooked veg, pine resin. Thick, sweet, with more resin and woody stem flavour coming through. Aftertaste is not entirely great kind of brussel sprouty.

Backlog rating. 33cl bottle from CBC Clerkenwell, London. It pours a hazy amber color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is quite sweet, with notes of ripe tropical fruits, toffee, port wine, alcohol, dates. Taste is again sweet with juicy fruity hops, banana, toffee, wood, caramel, figs marmalade, tart wild berries. Full bodied with sticky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Overall, very tasty but quite sweet

Bottle. Nose is odd - herbs, a lot of of orange, tropical fruits, caramel, very pronounced. Taste is orange, leading to deep pine, then tangerine, marmalade, sweet sugar note, lasting bitter. Slight pepperiness in the finish. As it warms dark fruit notes emerge in the middle, and light ester notes near the finish. It’s a pleasant beer but it feels much closer to a double/imperial IPA than a barley wine for me. The nose did not match the taste that well for me either.

Bottle. Tall Boys Beer Market, Leeds. Hazy, reddy amber. Film of pale tan head. Burnt caramel. Thick, syrupy hop. Some dried fruit. A bit cakey. Taste starts chewy sweet. Turns heavy bitter. Chewy palate. Full body. Not too boozy, though. Finishes long, full bitter. Very tasty. Very warming. Good stuff.

A rather mild barley wine with ’only’ 10%. With a hoppy sweetness and comparably little caramel. Nice barley wine that might be mistaken for an imperial IPA.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Ariel. Pours orange to brown with a medium beige head, aroma of honey, caramel, herbs, orange, flavor of orange, tangerine, strawberry, bitter sweet, medium to full bodied.

Crazy smooth for the abv! Fairly avg pour & aroma. The taste is light w/ a small sense of hoppiness. It’s tasty but I’d like a little bit more flavor explosion.

14/XI/14 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ Sanne’s birthday tasting (Gent) - BB: n/a (2014-1320) Thanks to ElManana for sharing the bottle!

Clear red beer, irregular yellowish head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: caramel, bit fruity, some exotic fruits, sweet and sugary. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very bitter, resinous, bit sweet, caramel, some citrus. Aftertaste: medicinal bitterness, very hoppy, up until an unpleasant level, alcoholic as well. Big disappointment.
