Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Tap at Smoke and Barrel. Larger beige head. Thicker poof lacing. Full hazed deep reddish amber pour. Nose is cheesy, stale DIPA- oh no not again. Tate is nutty, dusty, woody, cheesy, with thick strawberry cough drops. Ew. 100% cheesy old DIPA. Not my style at all.

Bottle courtesy of hogtownharry - Deep amber pour with a thin head. Very rich malty aroma. Chewy malt and a little bit of rich earthy hoppiness. A salty sort of malt character with some intense character and a bit of earthy bitterness and a touch of citrus. Very rich and fruity with a bit of pine on the back of the palate.

Bottle. Red, brown with a cream foam. Aromas are toffee with spicy alcohol and marzipan. Alcohol burn with hedgerow berries, raisins and yeast. Multigrain with lemon. Flavours are mellow spiced oranges with toffee and peppery, nutty alcohol. Autumn fruit with leafy notes and biscuit dry malts. Very boozy finish. Nice.

10oz on tap at Dutch’s. Mostly clear darker red color. Good thin cream-colored head, leaves good thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. Great texture.. Lightly dry finish. Great dark fruit aroma, and bigger hop to balance it out. Tropical fruit, some resin, pine. Moderate sweet, bigger bitter taste. Light bit of hoppy heat at the end. A real nice barley wine. A bit of heat to it, but a nice bit of hop as well. Nice, hoppy aromatic stuff.

2013-04-12. Dark amber body, good sized foamy beige head. 4+ Nice Aroma, alcoholic melange of hops and malt, typical American barleywine profile. Flavour is similar, mix of hoppy bitterness and caramel malt. Salty undertones 7++ Medium bodied palate. 3++ Solid, pretty textbook take on the style? Reminiscent of Old Leviathan or Old ruffian, or at least how I remember them being. Just a bit too alcoholic to get to the next level of appreciation for me. Good but I would only reach for it occasionally. Bottle shared by HogTownHarry

750 from Capone’s. Pours turbid rusty ruddy Carolina muddy brown with 2-finger tan head and well retained lace. This one looks great. Nose is heavy caramel malt, tabgeriney resiny hops, black pepper, spirity and hot. Tastes rich, with a big caramel malt, tangeriney hop, spirity, earthy, citric flavor. Assertive hops and heat in this, and well integrated and balanced flavors. This one is very very good, and stays hoppy throughout.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Ariel. Clear deep amber with a small beige head. Aroma of stale hops, some caramelly malt and a bit of alcohol. Sweet flavor, malty, continues with somewhat stale hops (still with malt in the background) and a bitter and kinda alcoholic finish. Somewhat oily mouthfeel. So-so.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2014 On tap at Local Option. Pours a hazy deep amber with a yellowish tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has notes of toffee, caramel and a strong pine hop notes. Flavor begins sweet with grains but finish is hoppy and resinous with a hint of backing caramel.
