Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ’probably the best in the world’, ’it works every time’ etc.? This American Barley Wine Ale says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Pours a clear and dark copper beer with an offwhite head. The aroma is malt, caramel, alcohol, fruit, dried fruit and hops with citrus. The flavor follows the nose. The palate is bitterness and sweetness. Overall a good beer.

Bottle to IPA glass Pine, spruce, caramel, plum, raisin. Almost clear amber with some fairly active carbonation and a 1cm creamy tan head. Taste is slamming bitterness right off the cuff which although transitions to a caramel sweetness for a few seconds, lingers and lingers. There’s some grapefruit, pepper, and blood orange in there too. The palate is assaulted with the bitterness, but even that can’t hide the 10.3%. Finally, I get some chalkiness after having a few sips.

This was poured into a mini-snifter, part of a flight at McGillicuddy’s, Williston, VT. The appearance was a hazy dark amber to brown color with no head and a slight glazed over little bit of sliding lacing, interesting but different. The smell started off with an interesting sweet to glossed over bitter-esque grassy sweet apple, light cherry, sly cocoa, light dry coffee bean. The taste wraps the aromas together to blend and give off a slightly woody feel in the aftertaste leading into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly nice sipping quality about it. Carbonation feels good for a Barleywine (is this supposed to be English or American?), eh, whatever. Overall, though styles seem to be melding these days, American or English barleywine, I still liked it for what it is, and yes, it does take a little bit of warming for the "tobacco-esque" features to come out in the aroma. Try it if you see it.

Bottle 33cl kindly shared by Alain. A copper beer with low head. Aroma is on caramel, blond caramel, bittering hops, sweet, peppery, bit alcoholic, not that complex.

L’étiquette dit " It’s intense, attention seeking ".

Medium beige head. Clear red body with lots of big soft flakes and light carbonation. Sugary fruity candy aroma with perfumy lemony notes. Dry resiny syrupy taste with roasty toffee notes. Full-bodied. Mild mouthfeel initially, then hotter. Dry roasty spicy wooden aftertaste with unclean fruity cocos notes. Wow. So disappointed. First poor Evil Twin beer I’ve had. (0.33l bottle, I forget where from.)
