COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“When I copied the famous Even More Jesus, I had to ask myself as an artist, why am I doing this? I didn’t honestly know. It was just an instinct about beer as pure form… in a sense this stout is like a metaphor for freedom - the sum of all the beauty that surrounds me and my perfect contemporary existence.”

Bottle - 12oz. Opaque black body with an average beige foamy/creamy head. Complex, robust malty/hoppy aroma with anise, woody, smokey, and cocoa hints. Alcohol is noticeable, but not too agressive. Its strong, complex taste carries plummy, anise, woody, coffeeish, and cocoa notes. Ends with a long, robust, warming bittersweet finish. Awesome!

On tap at Nedre Foss Gård, june 6th 2015. Black body, thick! Brown head. Aroma of strong coffee and burned licorice, taste keeps the licorice, adds fresh pine, dark chocolate, alcohol. Yes the alcohol is very notable here but not disturbing. Sweet warm roasty aftertaste. Quite nice!

Dark brown almost black body with light brown head. Some lacing as head dissipates. Aroma is roasted and sweet. Taste follows with sweet dried fruits, roasted coffee, and chocolate with some alcohol. Super smooth body nice medium/full body feel. Good stuff.

On tap during happy hour at Republic Seven Corners. Snifter pour. Tannish head. Dark black in color...maybe a really dark brown cola. Aroma is, in a word, indulgent. Strong chocolate, hints of toffee, and a toasted nut presence. Taste is definitely sweet with dark chocolate bitterness playing along especially at the end. Alcohol is ever present but not overpowering. Roasted malts at play too. I feel an overarching dark fruit characteristic like figs or raisins. This is the epitome of a dessert beer. I love this stout with my heart.

Bottle into a tulip. Pours black, with a large tan head. Nose is dark roast coffee and dark malt. Taste is malt forward, with coffee in the middle and some hop bitterness on the end. Huge flavor. Outstanding

On tap at BeerTemple in Amsterdam. Pours a very dark brown with no head. Aroma and taste ate very complex: dried fruits, winey, liqueur. Burnt malt aftertaste. Fantastic!

Tap at @himmeriget Cph. Pitch black with dark beige lasting head. Aroma winey, dried fruit, and complex fruity aromas and liquorice. Taste rich, dark chocolate, dried fruits like date, fig, nuts and raisins. Some vanilla in the finish and some coffee. Mouth is medium to heavy, with low carbonation. High drinkability though high percentage and complex taste.

Alengrin (4077) - BELGIUM - APR 8, 2016
UPDATED: APR 9, 2016 Renowned imperial stout by Evil Twin, from an older bottle. Thin, pale greyish beige head, moussy on the edges but dissolving quickly anywhere else; very dark burgundy colour, blackish but still translucent on the edges, with purplish hue. Intense, heavy, condensed aroma of home made caramel, fondant chocolate, stewed beef, shoe polish, banana peel, vanilla, hint of heavily perfumed tropical flowers, burnt sugar, roses, candied ginger, liquorish candy, date, venison gravy and even beef stock cube, bourbon, mouldy cellar and fresh - not to say moist - porcini, cloves, supple leather, dried seaweed, chestnut, dried apricot, overripe pear. Intense taste of heavy candied sweetness (fig, date, raisin) paired with equally intense umami flavors (strong gravy and beef stock, seaweed even), soft carbo, thick and ’fatty’ but smooth mouthfeel, thick layers of malts upon malts ensuing, very caramelly and ’oily’ at first but quickly shifting to bittering toastedness and eventually coffeeish roasted bitterness coating the mouth cavity; finish adds retronasal vanilla flavors, ’deep’ peppery hops - strong but not overpowering the bittersweet maltiness - along with a big presence of wodka-like alcohol, peppery, warming and even burning a bit. I guess this type of over-the-top big stouts can be a bit much in terms of both alcohol astringency and ’beefy’ umami flavors, but against that kind of ’wry’ violence, it offers a whole array of soft, vanilla- and chocolate-like sweetness; it has the same depth as many hyped American impies, but it also shares the same exaggerated boldness, which makes it tipple a bit to the wry side. Too sharply boozy for me, in other words, but certainly a very complex example of the style, doubtlessly capable of surviving many a year in a cellar in good conditions - perhaps my sample is still too young and too edgy on the alcohol level. Complex and exciting for sure, but maybe just a little bit too harsh and unorganized to be truly great, in my opinion.
