The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Pours thick black oil with a rich caramel colored head that dissipates quickly. The amazing aroma brings sweet brown sugat, coffee, and creamy malty roasted notes. The flavor brings coffee and weet roasted malts on a thick but perfect body.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. Black but a little thin looking. So much rich malts are smelled. Huge malts are tasted. Musty and dusty as well as all of that malt. Good stuff.

Bottle. Big, thick black pour with a medium sized tan head, pretty nice webby lace. Nose is big coffee, vanilla, almond extract, hazelnuts, lots of chocolate. Flavor is a bit too sweet for me, the sweet vanilla and almond flavors are very strong, and the coffee is strong and nice but plays second fiddle to the sweeter biscotti type flavors. Definitely a well made beer and much better than the regular BB. Hard for me to drink more than 5-6 ounces at a time. So rich.

22 oz bottle. It pours very dark brown with a brown head. The aroma is heavy on dark chocolate with some cinnamon and graham cracker. The flavor is extremely rich and chocolaty with some sweet raisin, graham cracker and cinnamon. Heavy roasted malt and a lightly ashy finish. Really great. Super tasty sipper that’s aptly named.

Bottle poured into glass. Dark black pour, thick and slightly oily. Aroma has sweet hints of chocolate, cocoa, coffee bean and slight vanilla. Flavor is more geared towards the coffee flavor but the chocolate definitely dominates the back end. Very stellar!

Nickls (1942) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - SEP 8, 2012
Bottle. Darker khaki tan head on a black body. Big chocolate presence, nice dark bitter coffee, cocoa powder and slight roast in the aroma. Nice coffee presence, flavor is very chocolatey and comes close freshly mixed Hershey’s syrup and milk, but with darker chocolate, finishes slightly bitter from roast qualiities. Medium to thicker silky body and warming. Very, very nice
