The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Pour is jet black with a tight dark mahogany head. Nose is rich, dark roasted malts with chocolate cake batter, anise, cooked brown sugar, and a bit of residual sugar. Taste is also big, not overly sugary for the richness. Deeply roasted dark malts with rich cake batter and brown sugar. Full bodied, light bitterness lingers through a softly carbonated finish.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2015 Bottle, must have been from 2012. It pours a deep, thick black with a dark brown head that grows to a half-inch, only to fizz away quickly. Beautiful. You take a whiff and find milk chocolate, some coffee, dates, raisins, figs, pumpernickel, and lots of boozy goodness. Roasted and fruity notes exist in complete harmony here. The alcohol is complementary, not detrimental, and gives the beer a beautiful spicy edge. The mouthfeel is substantial, with a viscous, but very smooth and silky, body and soothing carbonation that just makes it come to life and no more. Incredible. The taste is marginally less impressive than the nose, but still wonderful, with a toffee and dried-fruit sweet balanced by a roasted-barley and coffee bitter. Sugary dried fruits, cocoa, and alcohol linger under the palate for a bit. Almost as memorable as Even More Jesus himself. Promises of almonds and coffee were made and not completely fulfilled, but all is forgiven, because this is some industrial-grade goodness. Dark, viscous, sticky, boozy goodness. This is so good, it will pair up beautifully with a range of great foods, but it remains a breakfast beer at its core, so I think it goes best with an almond croissant (a good one) and some creme Chantilly.

One of my favorite offerings from evil twin. Thick dark brown pour and good lacing. Chocolate, cookies, fresh dough, toffee, maple, and vanilla on the nose. Creamy and sweet, like melted chocolate ice cream. Nice toasted malt, bread, cinnamon. Really excellent.

Dark with just a hint of burgundy around the edges. Cookie and baked bread aromas are very nice. Sweetened body of brown sugar and roasted figs. Good roast finish but the alcohol burns it off quickly.
