The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Pours nearly black with a deep caramel head that dissipates nearly immediately. Aromas of cacao, cappuccino, biscuit, vanilla bean, and sweet malts with just the faintest hint of alcohol. Taste is dark chocolate, mocha, vanilla creamer; nice warming sensation at the back of the throat from the booze, but it’s well-hidden in the taste. This beer literally *begs* to be aged in bourbon barrels (edit: apparently there is a version of this already), which would make it absolutely exquisite. As it is, it’s still very good.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2016 Tap@Taphouse. Pours black with thick creamy brown head, that quickly reclines to the sides of the glass. In the nose complex coffee, roasted malt with rich dark chocolates. Taste is coffee and biscotti! Rich, deep coffee with chocolate, almonds, vanilla, biscuit with some sweetness but ends dry. East to drink, tough high alcohol, that hides well, but is notable.

Bomber purchased at Distillers Outlet in Poway a little over two years ago in March 2014 ($18.99). "Best before 2015"...oops (though that seems odd for an impy stout). POURS a basic pitch black with a finger of dark brown foam that soon recedes into almost nothing. AROMA of dark hard roasted malts, roasted nuts, black-ish coffee, and creamy vanilla. FLAVOR of lightly creamed coffee, rich artisanal chocolate, vanilla, roasted dark malts, a certain almond / nutty characteristic, light molasses, and a bit of dark stewed fruits. Also has a slightly strange small bit of sourness into the finish. Very nice balanced sweetness that is well tempered by the roastiness. Lovely soft mouthfeel and quite smooth from start to finish. Somehow the almost 12% is really completely hidden here. Not sure if this would really remind me of biscotti in a blind tasting, but it’s a great quaff regardless. (731, 1019)

2016/04/17 - Pours a motor oil black with a thick, frothy, tan head that lingers. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, light vanilla, licorice, molasses and light figs. Taste is figs up front, chocolate, espresso, licorice, molasses and moderate booze. Mouthfeel is full and slick, with smooth carbonation and a bittersweet, warming finish. Doesn't hide the 11.5%. A delicious, straightforward Imperial stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours shiny and almost-black brown with a brown sugar head that starts foamy and slowly fades to a rim and coating with some native legs. Aroma is chocolate roasted malts and a touch of coffee and nut. Taste is rich, complex and delightful. Mainly sweet. Medium bodied but cloying. Taste is chocolate, mild coffee, and vanilla over a lightly roasted nutty malt backbone. Slight booze and charred wood in the aftertaste. Dessert.

Aged 3 years. Unreal and smooth. Vanilla, coffee and big licorice. Robust and a touch sweet up front. Light vanilla and espresso. Oh my.

UPDATED: APR 14, 2016 Wonderfully dark in color with caramel, coffee, and chocolate rising from the glass. Slightly aggressive pour yielded a smattering of bubbles only and no lace left behind either. Dark fruits like figs and raisins hit the taste buds first followed quickly by a caramel, molasses sweetness. Coffee/roast join in as well as some baker?s chocolate. Moderately full bodied with the perfect amount of sweetness and bitterness blended together on the palate hiding the 11.5 abv quite nicely, plus a pleasant aftertaste as well. I?ve always found myself enjoying Evil Twin Imperial stouts and this is no exception. A bit pricey for me but well worth the try! Amazing!

Pours dark as hell with no head. Aroma: super complex aroma of coffee, chocolate, dark malt (the usual ris stuff) followed by a pleasant touch of liquor and vanilla. Taste: roasted malt, coffee, chocolate but in a balanced and at the same time bold mix. I taste some marshmallow. Absolutely no sign of the 12 ABV. World-class.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip: Pours greasy jet black with a small tan head. Aroma of sugar, molasses, little bit of cocoa. Taste is cloyingly sweet, glad I split it 4 ways. Nice roasted flavors, cookies, cocoa. Full body, just too sweet for my liking.

Bottle from Belmont Station
Pitch black color with brown head, compact but not persistent. The aroma is wonderful; there are dark malts and dark chocolate, coffee truffle, fresh, floral. Good body strength, with very moderate residual sweetness; it has a very good flavor of dark chocolate, hints of coffee, and a strong dry liquorice presence that brings back memories of Danish beers such as Limfjords Porter; and then a touch of chili peppers.
