The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

RATING #500!!! Poured from 22oz bottle. Pours black as night with a bit of light brown head. Aroma is some cafe mocha, creme brulee and a touch of chocolate brownie. Taste follows with notes of burnt sugar, coffee and brownies. Sweet but not overwhelming. Tasty stuff.

Tallboy can from Spirits Jackson. Poured a super thick pitch black under a large slightly foamy mocha colored head. Aroma is dark chocolate, vanilla extract, burnt muffins, dark cherry, sherry and biscotti. Flavor mimics the aroma with the dark cherry and biscotti coming out on the end of bother aroma and fkavor. Body is dense and thick with softer carbonation but super strong heat throuhout. The heat is a bit too much or else I would of rated this higher.

Batch 001. Pours pitch black. World class head volume, lacing and retention. Quite outstanding nose of rich cocoa, milk chocolate, light vanilla notes, light coffee and caramel over soft hints of almond. Full bodied with a rich and creamy texture that also has oily aspects. World class carbonation / body balance. Just enough effervescence to open the flavors up yet not disturb the rich body. The finish is just slightly prickly. The flavor profile is borderline world class. The alcohol content becomes subtly uncovered. It begins with a rich sweet mixture of milk chocolate and caramel. As the middle approaches, the chocolate takes on a more bitter bakers chocolate profile with cocoa. Mid-palate bitterness is mild with a slight roast aspect coupled with coffee. It should be noted that the coffee aspect is quite subtle. After the middle, vanilla takes center stage with almond underneath. The finish is a slow, slightly dry and with a touch of heat, fade that has a subtle note of plum.

Can into a shaker showing big black with translucent rims and no head. The nose shows deep intense notes of roasted coffee but with a bright note of vanilla running throughout. The palate is aggressively carbonated with a medium bodied. Vanilla sweetness appears throughout lightening the coffee and placing it in the background. Very vanilla forward with a strong alcoholic spice. The almonds and vanilla seem to bring a slight sweetness similar to lactose but overall, a quaffable fun beer.

Pours dark brown with mocha head, dense but brief, which leaves some skim. Nose runs true to form, coffee with biscuit/cookie. Palate takes a bit to sort itself out, coffee with a shot of vanilla liqueur, toast, licorice, almond finally comes through as alcohol, so that shot is now amaretto. Gets progressively sweeter as it warms, with black cherry showing up. Though there is a mildly bitter current as an offset, the end remains sweet. At 11.5 percent ABV, your brunch/snack should be something more substantial than actual biscotti.

2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable (base brew: 20C Imperial Stout)

AROMA: Mostly coffee and vanilla; some dark malt. Additives are nice but obscure the base brew. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Deep black, no highlights. Medium dark tan foam. Plenty of lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Slightly bitter up front with roasted malt flavor and light coffee. Very sweet throughout the second half. Strong vanilla taste with black cherry on the finish. I don’t get almond or biscotti-like flavors, though. No alcohol presence, thankfully. Very tasty overall, but borders on cloying. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Not viscous as expected. More of a medium/full body that’s highly carbonated for the style (which makes it easier to drink). No alcohol heat or burn. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely a delectable beer, though it can get a little cloying. Lack of booziness is impressive. 9/10
