The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Serving: from tap at The Beer Junction. Aroma: moderate chocolate aroma. Appearance: small, frothy, brown, initial head with no lacing and fully diminishing longevity. Dark brown/black body. Taste: heavy/harshly sweet, dark-chocolate, initial flavor and finish with long duration. Palate: medium body, oily texture and soft carbonation. Overall: at first it tasted really good--like a dark-chocolate bar--but the overwhelming sweetness quickly got old. By the time I’d finished half the glass, I was getting tired of it and it took a while to finish the second half. Reminded me of the days after Halloween during my childhood when I’d eaten too much candy in one sitting. It would be great in a four ounce sampler, but an entire glass was too much.

Bottle. The look is dark, black in color, with a tan head. The smell is soy sauce, cocoa notes, malt, chocolate brownies, and booze. The taste is alcohol, boozy, soy, chocolate, malt, roast, and good. Good beer but just missing from great. Big and lots going on.

Pours pitch black with mocha brown, fat head. Sweet, yet slight boozy nose. Coffee and roasted malts. Slight booze in taste on impact, but rounds off into sweetness and vanilla. A little sherry finish on it. Hard rock candy and oxidation. Little sharp malty sweetness, like molasses. Bitter dry chocolate. DRY!

On tap at Giant Eagle in Grandview. Blackish pour with thin tan head that leaves a ring. Aroma of sweet and roasty malt, chocolate. Tastes mix all of the typical imp stout flavors well - cocoa, vanilla, coffee, molasses. It’s the palate and drinkability that put this over the top - thinnish with bit of a milky vibe.

1 pt. 6 oz. bottle poured at my brothers place in Methue, MA. Pours black with a minimal brown head. Smells like coffee and tastes like coffee. Has a sweetness that sticks around. I like it.

OK, if I knew this was an impy stout, I may not have tried it but now you have it. Big and black. No head. Slight coffee aroma. Coffee apparent all the way on the buds. Some creaminess detected on the uptake. Becomes more in yer face as the session continues. A little rude on the finish, medium linger. Not as bad as most impy stouts. Almost thought it was a stronger dry stout.

Bottle. Pitch black pour with a big mocha head. Almond, coffee, vanilla, caramel, bourbon. Smooth. A lot of flavor but well balanced and silky. Alcohol is well hidden. Really nice
