The Roman Empire had a certain “je ne sais quoi” festive food culture, extravagant architecture and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen – that’s still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient – keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

On tap @ What’s Brewing 15. Pours pitch black, with a small creamy mocha head. Aroma is sweet roasted malts with biscuits, dark chocolate and lactose, as well as notes of wood and liquorice. Full, creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet roasted malts, with tobacco, muscovado and cocoa, as well as liquorice vanilla and lactose. Lingering bitter malty notes in the finish.

I want to thank Sharon for this one, thanks Sharon. Pours a thick, oily black with a nice frothy head, lots of clinging lacing. Aroma is chocolate, coffee and heavily roasted malt. Flavor follows. This is terrific beer, a bit too sweet for an everyday beer, but certainly worthy of special occasions!

Pitch black and completely opaque without even the slightest bit of lighter color. Two finger, dark mocha head that has good retention, only slowly settling into a thick, lasting ring. Splotches of soapy lacing left behind. Looks great! Deeply roasted dark malt aroma with perfectly roasted gourmet coffee beans, lactic cream, silky chocolate malt notes and subtle English biscuit/cookie in there. Deep roast but not acrid or burnt smelling with hints of charred toast, oatmeal, dark choose and espresso bean followed by bakers chocolate, caramel, toffee, lactic cream and biscuit. Full bodied and viscous with deeply roasted coffee bean and dark malt flavor. Dry and pretty bitter but never acrid or harsh wih lots of lactose and silky chocolate malt sweetness countering the roast. Excellent espresso bean flavor along with burnt toast, oatmeal and dark cacoa powder. Lactic cream toward the finish smoothing things out along with silky chocolate, fudge, bakers chocolate, toffee and caramel. Very complex and I can even pick up hints of licorice, English biscuit and dark fruit as it warms. Decent heat but the ABV is well masked making this beer very easy to drink. There’s a really great balance of roasted coffee and sweeter dessert-like notes which also help drinkability. Another impressive beer from Evil Twin.

Flaska från whole foods nyc. Svart med ljusbrunt skum. Portvin och jordnötskakor i smaken. Mjuk och fyllig, portvin och choklad i smaken med kaffebeska på slutet.

Finally got my hands on a bottle of this. Pours out pretty much black with a decent tan head. Aroma is of lots of chocolate, dark roast coffee, light sweetness and a touch of alcohol. Taste is complex, lots of darker roast coffee, creamy smooth mouthful, nice dark chocolate, roast, some syrupy notes, vanilla. This is dangerous as the abv is well hidden.

Bomber. Black coffee pour topped with sudsy brown foam. Strong notes of Kahlúa, vanilla bean and dark chocolate fudge along with some roasted malt, dark fruits and toffee. Taste starts with a heavy dose of bittersweet chocolate syrup, espresso and vanilla with a bit of black cherry and charred malt toward the end. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and slightly syrupy with low carbonation and more coffee liqueur and chocolate malt in the finish. Overall, a solid Imperial Chocolate Stout although there’s no trace of biscotti to be found.

Pours a very dark brown with a rather fizzy mocha foam colored head. Chocolate, vanilla, sorghum, and robustly roasted malt aromas. Thick and a little flat. Chocolate, vanilla, sorghum, some coffee, but a lot of cherry in the flavors.

Danish pint. Dark dark brown to black with a mocha head. Nose involves lots of chocolate, very fudgy or brownie-like, with some impressively sharp hopping underneath, with notes of resin and citrus. Very sweet, also pretty bitter. Not as heavy as you might think, creamy, soft, slick, almost numbing with alcohol on the end. Cool to try, definitely a sipper and built for sharing. Taking down a 22 of this would, though certainly not impossible due to the drinkability, would still give you diabeetus.
