Inky black pour, wit a thick, frothy, dark tan head - intense but balanced nose of cocoa, espresso, light vinous notes, even some berry-ish fruitiness (raspberries, cranberries) - smells like a decadent raspberry chocolate cake - low, soft carbonation - sweet, for sure,, but tempered by deep roastiness and a late acidity that makes it seem drier than it actually is - rich flavors of bittersweet chocolate - slick, oily mouthfeel - some vinous character, raspberry - some tobacco notes in the finish - intense but wonderfully balanced - awesome beer.

3fourths (7859) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - OCT 3, 2013
UPDATED: DEC 21, 2013 Bottle dated June 10 2013. Inky chocolate and roast / roasted nut / nut oils, plenty of dark red and brown fruit / figs / plum. Nicely on the dry side compared to many 11% porter / stout. Wonderfully savory and rich, medium to high bitterness but thankfully malt-forward in the nose. Cleanly fermented and the lively natural carbonation (?) provides bitter, nearly salty, delectable fudge cake savoriness. Quality cocoa. Sugary and chewy but seemingly dry given carbonation and acid and bitterness. The carbonation is quickly effervesced and it becomes more chewy black cherries or bitter cranberries or maybe craisins. But I donít judge it by its character when flattened . Lively fresh pours? Oh my.

Bottled. Pours pitch black with a small, lacing and brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee notes. Sweet flavor that ends up slightly bitter. Medium to full bodied, oily text. and soft carb. A great porter.

The aroma is misleading. Even at 11.5%, the aroma led me to believe I was getting a Porter that was light on the parlet. This is strictly a desert brew. Strong in coffee, with more than a hint of cocoa (not chocolate). It is a fine beer at the price, but not one I could drink on a consistent basis, which I look for in all my libations.

RABinCO (1139) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - SEP 29, 2013
June 2013 bottle into a goblet. Pours super deep brown, nearly black, with a deep brown head. Thick brown head. Big roasted aroma. Dark fresh espresso, chocolate, milk chocolate. Taste is bitter espresso, chocolate, dark roasted malt, stone fruits. Any hint of booze is covered by the deep roast flavors.

Black pour with a thin tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, dark chocolate, and molasses. Flavor is sweet and roasty with notes of coffee. Finish is a little warm from the abv but overall a pretty solid brew.

Pour out of 12 oz bottle dark black pour with thin tan head, aroma brought notes of caramelized sugar, roast, some dark chocolate, coffee bean, slight anise, hints of oak, dark fruits as well. Taste is a nice mix of dark chocolate, lots of caramel, molasses, dark sugars, mix of dark fruits into some coffee bean, roast, slight bitterness, more sweet notes finishing dry. Tasty for sure.

Draft at torst, flavor and smell was roasted, malty, light bitterness, overall a very solid American porter
