Shall one compare thee to a fair beer, Not even this perfect porter before thou will do thee justice. Thou art more complex, brave and cunning. Thou have changed more than a brew will ever. Thou may be lil’, but thy mind is greater than words can speak and beer will ever taste.

Bottle (330 ml). Very dark brown (almost black) with a small quickly diminishing reddish brown head and no lacing. Aroma of liquorice, dark fruits, chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, spices and caramel. Taste is moderately sweet with liquorice, fruits, chocolate, roasted malt, vanila, caramel, spices and a warming (alcohol) finish). Full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Spicy finish. A tad too much going on in this one, so the balance is so-so. Complex. Not so drinkable, even for the style.

This has lots of fresh brownie and espresso in the aroma - mmm. However, I wasn’t blown away by the taste - day-old coffee and cocoa powder dominate. It is more interesting on the palate, where it brings some warmth and astringency. A good big beer, but a little overrated imo.

Bottle @ Brouwer’s Café:   Black, thin to moderate frothy beige head, some legs in the lacing.   Rich roasted malt nose, some dark chocolate, a little charred wood, but also a slight touch of cow pasture.   Rich sweet and roasty malts on the tongue, dark chocolate, charred wood, and thankfully not that cow pasture I got on the nose.   Warming but not alcoholic.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Very rich on the finish.   A little ashy on the backside.   Great beer!

courtesy of Thomas - black beer with a fast collapsing foam; huge roasted chocolatey aroma, notes of pralines and coffee too; hints of vanilla; full-bodied and with some initial sweetness; very bitter; long roasted coffeish and chocolatey finish with some warming alcohol notes

Draft in a sampler at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a deep, virtually opaque brown with a small lighter brown head. The aroma is a bit smoky, with roasted malts, toasted sugar, dark chocolate, salted caramel, and a hint of dark fruit and anise. The flavor starts out the same, but instantly drops into more soy and rubbery notes, with just a little bit of chocolate and brown sugar to balance. Medium-bodied, with very little carbonation and a flat, bitter mouthfeel. Very strange. I’m glad I only had a little bit of this.

Cellar temperature and into a chalice. Low pffft and a swift release of gas before nothing. Into the glass it goes and it pours like used engine oil. An head of homebrew consistency forms and falls. Loose, mucky deep brown suds last little more than the time it takes for a whiff and a smile. Aroma is dominated by bready, fresh baked biscuit soaked in rich, milk chocolate. There is a good dose of Marzipan also, some thick, treacly chocolate liqueur, light heat, touch of Iranian dates in syrup and savoury fruit mince. Quite rich, decadent, sweet and sultry on the palate with a breathable burn to remind you who is boss. Oily, soft and sticky is the mouthfeel. Almost lifeless with a deeply viscous, fruity, bitter and warming finish that is amazingly shortlived in some ’lovable’ elements. As the aroma suggests it has loads of chocolate, biscuit, Marzipan, fruit mince, a hint of lightly roasted coffee bean and carob bean. Husky with a bit too much burnt malt to tense up the tongue between sips. There is nothing truly unique about this one and its links to Porter are just a little flawed but it is definitely an aperitif of a beer suited for slow sipping. Not bad, just not excellent. (12fl. Black and silky with brown/ruby creamy head. Smoky, chocolately aroma, hints of oak barrel. Some alcohol warmth is apparent in the aroma as well. Taste is dark and smoky, chocolate, extremely smooth, yet sharp at the same time. Nice!
