Imperial India Black Stout. This is a complete RTD Black and Tan. Not just any Black and Tan but the one where we flawlessly mixed a flippant good Imperial IPA with a profoundly evil Imperial Stout and sustained sweet beer balance. 33% Stout and 67% IPA.

Pours an opaque black with a frothy brown head that leaves lacing up the glass. Aroma is a wonderfully complex mix of roasted malts, caramel, resin, chocolate, coffee and citrus. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, resin, grapefruit, light nuttiness and smooth bitterness into the finish with a smooth warm alcohol. Moderate carbonation blends a complexity of flavors on this beer and blends all the flavors together with genius.

Created by pouring Yin and Yang in equal parts from the bottle into a crystal glass. Colour is dark brown (the same as the Yin) with heavy brown head that persists; good lacing. Aroma is an elixir that blends the roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and caramel of Yin with the heavy hops, grapefruit, pine, and orange of Yang. The flavour is heavy sweetness against heavy bitterness with the bitterness winning. Crisp ascerbic finish. This works, but the heavy hops are a bit over-powering. As in every couple, one tends to over-power the other.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown with a lasting tan head with lace. Aromas of roastiness, bitter chocolate, light pine and alcohol. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of bitter chocolate, roastiness, light coffee, light citrus and light pine with a smooth bitter lingering chocolate finish. The alcohol was noticeable in the flavor.

Bottle; Pour is murky brown, with a fine bubbled khaki head here; there’s a hint of mahogany in the light. Retention is average, with some sticky lacing present, and a hazing effect that slowly recedes. The nose is roasted coffee bean, chicory, light chocolate, with pine present from the hop profile. The flavor profile has a more balanced feeling in comparison. Cream, roast, chocolate, chicory, and cake are balanced with bittering pine and mild tropical notes - with a lingering finish....

UPDATED: APR 10, 2014 Pitch black tan head. Fun to pour together (this review of mixed yin and yang not one bottle). Mostly bitter hops aroma, smokiness gone for the most part. Not in a bad way. So many flavors. First sweet maltiness then big hops then smoky sweetness and bitter finish. Really good. Similar to beer hop breakfast but somehow seems ever so slightly less good.

Overt coffee with slight roast. A little tar and pine. Ack with garnet highlights and full brown head. Hops more prevalent on flavor with floral and moderate high roast. Crisp, dry finish and moderate bitter throughout.

I like the idea of mixing a DIPA with an IS, however, the base beers need to be good. Unfortunately this was not the case, with the two together being rather average.

33 cL bottle courtesy co Chris, served in a stem glass side-by-side with Yin, Yang and our own blend of Yin and Yang. Pours black with a small light tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a slight amount of lace. On the nose, there are elegant notes of chocolate, brown sugar and a hint of espresso, along with herbal and slight piney hops. The flavour is moderately sweet up front with chocolate and roasty malts, developing nutty, caramel notes and a subtle herbal hoppy bitterness. The finish is long and roasty. Overall, a beautifully complex black IPA with nice chocolate notes and hoppy balance. 2013-06-07
