English Language Label: This is one half of a Black & Tan. Not just any Black & Tan, but one where a toasted smug and hoppy fella get together to make a sublime Taiji balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this profoundly evil Imperial Stout solo).

Bottle share at Leighton’s as ’Evil Twin Yin Imperial Taiji Stout’, 10%, Brewdog version. Opaque black with a small foamy brown head. Aroma is meaty sweet, rosewater, chocolate syrup. Body is smooth, soft carbonation, a little foamy. Taste is chocolatey, light pine, rose, mixed fruits, dry salty spice finish. Pretty nice hoppy impy.

Bottle at home in London - can’t recall where I bought this one, but I’ve had it for four+ years (it was brewed at BrewDog). Pours deep black with a dense, frothy beige head. Rich roasted malts in the nose, some hints of oxidation (something akin to burnt cardboard, but in a pretty good way), hearthy chocolate, dried fruits. Medium to heavy sweet flavour, with strong aged and leathery dark fruits, raisins, berries, moderate earthy bitterness, charred pine. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine to average carbonation. Somewhat warming on the finish, a bit sticky sweet, with sugary chocolate, lots of aged fruits, gooey raisins, ashy roast, scorched earth. Some lingering ash in the aftertaste. Overall, this is heavy-hitting stuff, but it makes for a great sipper. And also, it has aged very well.

Tap @ BeerTemple, small sample. Dark color, short frothy head. Aroma of roast, bit licorice, some dark fruit. Bit sweet in taste, roasty bitterness. Should have taken more mental notes, thought I already rated this :-D

Tap @ Beer Temple, sample size. Black color. Rather dense beige/light brown head. Aroma’s: nice roast, hint of red fruit. Retronasal there’s drop/licorice, roast, light fruit. Flavor is moderate sweet, a bit fruity. Body is medium (could have been a bit fuller). Finishes with roast and mocha.

Surprisingly light and drinkable for a big stout. The roasted character is more restrained than a lot of Evil Twin impies. Slightly sweet, sot carb, lots of milk chocolate and mild coffee. Nice.

Flasche: Literally black, small and stable tanned head, pretty solid nose of roasted malt, leather, dried fruits and cacao-powder; solid dryish bitter-sourish flavour, medium to full bodied, neither tart nor soft; lingering bitter-sourish finish with dried fruits, toasted malt, vinous traces, well hidden warming alcohol and chocolate. Oh yes! Very good…
