English Language Label: This is one half of a Black & Tan. Not just any Black & Tan, but one where a toasted smug and hoppy fella get together to make a sublime Taiji balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this profoundly evil Imperial Stout solo).

On tap at the Cask, Pimlico (Feb ’12) served into a half pint tulip style glass. Pours a rich black colour, dark chestnut brown on the edges when held to the light, with a frothy brown/cream head. Roasted malts dominate the aroma along with a little coffee, treacle and leather. Roasted malts also made for the large part of the flavour. Also getting a little licqourice, tar and coffee and a smidgen of molasses. Slick and oily in terms of mouthfeel and it went down very well, almost too well for a 10% ABV beer if you know what I mean !!! Overall a very good imperial stout, and I felt that the flavour improved a little when the beer began to warm slightly.

Sweet hot-chocolate aroma. Bkack in color with nice off-white head. Also moderately sweet in flavor, yet quite balanced; lightly roasty but full bodied and flavored with a bit of apple/lemon fruitiness in the finish under the chocolatiness. Deceptivly strong. Chocolate is the major component of the flavor and really a delicious stout...good with desert.

Black core with a light tan head. Smokey nose with some mocha aromas. Full bodied with more smoke on the palate, black plummy fruit and roasted coffee bean. Creamy texture, but in balance with high carbonation.

Oh yeah, this is good. Thick and chewy, yet has a nice graininess to it. Yum. The alcohol doesn’t present itself while you’re imbibing this magnificent brew but you feel it later when you can’t walk, or type straight. This almost has a little bit of milkiness to it also. Strange. But great.

Tap at Stillwater’s Of Love and Regret. Very dark bown pour with a chocolate milk colored foamy head that laces very well. Mild coffee and bittersweet chocolate aroma. Taste is unsweetened cocoa powder with iced coffee. Less sweet than American imperial stouts. Full in the mouth with roast and anise.

Whole Foods, Vienna 330ml (on sale for $6): Pours a black color with a brown head, of course. Aroma is heavily hopped. some smoke, lots of roasted malts, and a bit of dark chocolate. Taste is much the same. Hop bitterness hits at the front. The dry roasted malt finish hits hard towards the back. Alcohol supremely well-covered. I have a Yang in my fridge and I sort of regret that I didn’t mix them together, but oh well. I’ll drink the Yang later.
