English Language Label: This is one half of a Black & Tan. Not just any Black & Tan, but one where a toasted smug and hoppy fella get together to make a sublime Taiji balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this profoundly evil Imperial Stout solo).

Old review from last May, On tap. Pour is a dark black body with small tan head and good lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, fruity hops. Taste is very smokey with good floral and chocolate notes maybe even some blackberry coming through as well. Smooth mouth and easily drinkable for the rauch style. First beer I have sampled from a brewer with an increasingly good repuation. Worth trying.

Aroma is heavy malts and coffee/chocolate. The flavor is malty and vinous, with a slight alcohol burn in the finish.

Bottle from City Beer. Pours cola color with a modest tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a hearty chocolate and dark molasses flavor with a dry bitter finish. Blends well with the Yang.

opaque black with a ring a brown foam. syrupy full body with medium-full carbonation. could use more silkiness and richness, with not less, but softer carbonation.

aroma: dark roasted malt, blackened raw barley, caramel malt, some licorice root, and a bit of silage. fairly dry.

taste: lots of roasted barley, smokey charr, some background sweetness, subtle herbal hop presence, hints of soy sauce and blackened mushrooms, and flitting notes of over-baked fruit cake.

12oz bottle - Thick rocky three finger dark tan head. Dark brown body. Bubbles on side of glass. Aroma of toasted oatmeal. Thick mouthfeel. Flavors of bittersweet cocoa and brown rice. Nice brew albeit on the expensive side.

Bottle and served in NB Worthy glass: Pours nearly opaque with an oily character and little lace. The aroma has overwhelming notes of roast, tobacco, leather, sea salt, smoke and french oak. Just a touch of herbal, grassy and as well as citric hop character. Most excellent!

The taste is very roasty, slightly sweet, mildly smoky, and a touch fruity. Nice coffee tones around the edges. Yeah, it is good on the palate but displays very much a been there done that feel about it. The mouth feel is oily but a tad under carbonated. Overall, a good brew I would easily drink again but also a brew I would not seek out again.

Bottle. A more or less black one, with a small, dense, tan head. Mocha coffee, some licorice and alcohol on the nose, a bit one dimensional maybe. The flavor is rather lovely, with mocha, licorice, roasted malts, sweetness and a touch of alcohol. Full-bodied and warming, finishing with a lasting roasted and sweet flavor. Well, a bit one dimensional maybe, lacking the complexity of the very best imperial stouts, but it’s a fine brew anyway, that’s for sure. 110930

Bottle. Black pour, thin tan head. Aroma is bready, roasty, beechwood, spicy and full. Flavor is roasty bitter, chocolate and bready. Great stout.
