English Language Label: This is one half of a Black & Tan. Not just any Black & Tan, but one where a toasted smug and hoppy fella get together to make a sublime Taiji balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this profoundly evil Imperial Stout solo).

Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a pitch black color with a tiny light brown colored head. The head fades very fast to leave a bit of thick and syrupy lace on the sides of the glass. You can tell just by swirling the beer in the snifter that this is going to be a thick and syrupy brew. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell with tons of sweeter more sugary aromas mixed within. There is a good showing of brown sugar, caramel, and molasses which is accompanied by some sweet vanilla and milk chocolate tastes. Some dark fruit aromas of fig and prune are there as well enhancing the sweetness even more and are joined by a hint of an almost coffee liquor aroma. A bit of wood and a decent showing of a burnt coffee smell are there as well, overall producing a nice dark, roasty, and sweet smell with just a hint of a warming booze. Taste – The taste begins with a thick roasted malt flavor with a good showing of a sweet brown sugar and caramel taste. A vanilla flavor is present soon after the initial taste which grows in intensity as the taste advances. Along with, and complementing well, the increase in vanilla, comes a milk chocolate flavor. Only a light level of darker fruits come to the tongue, being almost entirely of a prune and cherry taste. A little bit of an espresso also joins the profile more toward the middle of the taste, adding just a hint of bitterness to the brew. Some light herbal and grassy tastes come to the tongue more toward the end as well, but these are quite light in comparison to the sweeter and roasted flavors of the brew only adding a touch more of bitterness. While some booze is present in the nose, there is very little detected on the tongue, and with a surge of milk chocolate coming at the very end of the taste, one is left a smoother roasted and sweet imperial stout flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is super thicker and creamy with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. The thick and syrupy feel is great for the big sweet and dark flavors of the brew and allows all the big flavors to coat the tongue and bath it in all the big flavors. Overall – Being quite big on sweetness and with only a little alcohol taste, this brew is a dangerously and easy drinking 10 % abv stout. A rather tasty brew and one to try.

330ml bottle. Pitch black body with a huge tan fluffy head. Loads of lacing. Chocolate, dried fruit, spices, roasted malt, well balanced alcohol, soy and old coffee. Finishes off with a long medium bitterness and alcohol.

(bottle - 12 oz) Dark brown pour with a fluffy tan head. Heavy smoke in the aroma along with a light chocolate and meaty backbone. Roasted and burnt malts at the start of the flavor with a smokey middle leading to a very bitter and lingering aftertaste.

Bottle, 12 FL OZ. Pours jet black with a thin layer of dark tan head, leaving significant lazing in it’s wake. Sweet, bready malts make up the majority of the aroma, backed up by cereal, some dark fruits, muscavado sugar, and caramel. Malt character in the aroma seems less roasted or burned than expected for an imperial stout. Malts much more roasted/burned in the taste and continue to dominate, this time backed up by (very) dark chocolate, a bit of coffee, wholemeal bread, salted caramel, with some liquorice and hints of hoppy bitterness on the finish. This is a very bitter one in general, from both the burned malts and dark chocolate as well as the finishing hops. Texture is rather oily, body is full yet moderate carbonation means this is less smooth than it could be, and the carbonation itself seems possibly artificial. Alcohol is as warming as expected of a 10%, but not detectable on either the nose or the tounge. Well-made, enjoyable imperial stout, but I’ve certainly had better.

12oz bottle shared by Dan P. In White Castle parking lot. Poured into clear solo cup. Poured black with a thick creamy brownish tan head. Aroma and taste mimicked each other with notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, cardboard, spice, and lots of earthyness.

Bottle (330 ml). Black with a small brown head and little lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, liquorice, caramel, light spiciness and hints of soy sauce. Taste is sweet (almost cloying) with an heavy roasted malt presence, liquorice, some spiciness, minty notes and alcohol. Full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Lingering spicy finish. Aroma is quite nice, but the taste is a little cloying and the mouthfeel isn’t anywhere near what is expected from the best of the style. Lack of balance.

Black with a thick creamy head, aromas of toasted malts, smooth thick body awesome flavour with a lingering bitter aftertaste, sensational stout, am looking forward to blending the Yin & Yang to try the Black & Tan.
