4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aroma is filled with scents of allspice, clove, and nutmeg. Color is a beautiful sunny golden hue. Initial taste is heavy with notes of sweet baked cinnamon pumpkin. Mellows out into a medley of seasonal spices; very smooth and pleasant. Finishes clean with a bright sweetish bitterness. Lightly carbonated, but just enough to effectively deliver flavors.

Draft sample at their tasting room yesterday, orangy dark amber color with light tan head. Aroma of pumpkin, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), toast and Belgian yeast notes (some fruitiness, clove). Taste adds notes of caramel, allspice and citrus. Medium-light body, moderate carbonation, dry with faint fruity roast finish. Fruitier pumpkin ale, quite nice.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A brown Belgian ale without the pumpkin but everything else. Pours an orangey brown color, generous off white to tan colored head, splotchy lacing. Aroma of molasses, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice. Flavor followed, Belgian yeasties underneath, bread, assorted other spices. Mouthfeel moderate in body and carbonation. Nice stuff.

I appreciate the Belgian twist on the pumpkin beer, but itís still overly spiced, thin, astringent, and overall just meh. Nutmeg and cinnamon with some Belgian yeastiness.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Strong clove nose, pumpkin and cinnamon underneath. Cloudy orange, thick head with little retention. Pumpkin is dominant, but cloves are also prominent. Light body, alcohol not noticeable. Dry, not overly spiced. While pumpkin ales donít lend themselves to revisiting, this is quite sessionable.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Moriartys. Hazy copper pour. Slight fizzy/foamy off-white head that mostly disappears. Big green squash flavors. Not quite pumpkin, but does taste natural. A wee bit tart. Thankfully juicier than spicier - though mulling spices are clearly present: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and clove. Okay, but not a standout.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a hazy copper color. The head is a one finger white shade. Itís very fizzy-looking with poor retention. No lacing, either.
S: Thereís some typical allspice character from a-- wait, Belgian yeast? Yep, those apple, grape, and pear notes are unmistakable. I also get some brown sugar sweetness. The yeast helps give it a unique twist missing in many other pumpkin ales.
T: First things first, I donít get much actual gourd flavor. Rather, this is loaded with spices - both allspice and yeast-derived. These two elements have good cohesion, thankfully. It finishes with a nice wave of brown sugar. The nuance and depth of this one is pretty good; my only complaint is that itís a bit sweet (especially taking the use of Belgian yeast into consideration).
M: Medium bodied - not too heavy nor too light. The finish is both dry and sweet, with the former being aided with strong carbonation. Okay, it doesnít have bone dry feel of, say, Orval, but itís still pretty drinkable in comparison to its complexity.
O: Even though Iím a fan of Evolution, my expectations for this werenít particularly high because hey, itís a frigginí pumpkin ale. My fears were assuaged, because this is quite good. Unlike a lot of the mediocre examples of the style, this is both tasty and relatively deep. This brewery has no hype why?
