3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (6835) - Columbia, USA - JAN 17, 2011
Pours a mostly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a spotty-lacing beige head. Has a lightly sweet and nutty nose with some dark caramel and chocolate notes with a touch of smoke. Starts with pretty good fullness for the style with a chewy toasted dark caramel malty sweetness and nice dark chocolate flavor with some light peaty smokiness that lingers in the drier finish. A well-balanced, flavorful and drinkable porter.

Poured from the bottle into a 4oz sampling glass to drink. The beer had a dark brown-black color with a dark amber-brown hue, an average-sized, creamy dark tan head with average retention and cling, but good lacing. Its aroma featured a blend of malts featuring caramel, coffee, and chocolate, along with touches of molasses and a bit of earthy hops. The taste had a sweet, fruity burst, touches of caramel and raisin on the front of the tongue, and a somewhat sour toffee component. It was a wet beer with an average thickness and was somewhat creamy and smooth. Thank you to Eric and Siobhan for the tasting.

Dark brown w/ quickly dissipating tan head. Sweet aroma of chocolate and vanilla, slight citrus notes. Taste is more complex...vanilla, citrus, apples, pale malts, and maybe some coffee...Has a cider taste to it. Thin body and lots of carbonation. Too sweet for me. Very dry. Interesting "porter" nonetheless.

Received in trade from mdaschaf, thanks for the opportunity.
Pours a solid dark brown bordering on black with a good sized off white head that displays moderate retention and lace. Smells of light chocolate and brown sugar mostly. Has hints of earth and a slight mineral edge to it. Taste is mostly caramel and brown sugar with only a tease of chocolate in it. There’s a hint of oxidation mixed in here with a hint of tart fruitiness and bits of earth and mineral water. Beautiful creamy silky smooth mouthfeel, moderate level of carbonation with a medium body. Decent porter but nothing earth shattering here. Oxidation and tartness seem quite out of place here.

12 ounce thanks to Elwood. Slightly thin porter with big carbonation. Some chocolate and roast. Not much smoke, and that is good.

Black with a thin tan head. Weak smoky chocolate nose. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, although a little thin at the same time. Solid smoky taste, mixed with a semi-sweet malty flavor that mixes with and fades to the slightest bitter hop ending.
