Jacques Au Lantern, our Belgian-inspired pumpkin ale, is now on at the taproom. 6.1% abv, unfiltered and a whirlwind of spicy flavors and aromatics. It would take me a while to describe this one, it’s probably easier for all of us if you just stop by and try it.

From tap. Pours cloudy orange with a fully gone head. Aroma is spiced, nutmeg, cinnamon, the whole disaster...Bitter, toasted malty and solid bitter. Medium dry and herbal into a slight bitter and dry finish. Bitter and toasted malty finish.

From the bottle, pours a dirty greenish red with a dissipating bubbly (we’ll call it a) head. Aroma is much more vegetable/herb than what you’d expect from a pumpkin ale. Sour, notes of fresh pumpkin and spinach? Taste is very sour, and like you’re eating the seeds out of the pumpkin you’re carving, sprinkled with cinnamon and cloves. A harsh flavor if you’re expecting a normal pumpkin ale. I feel bad giving this a bad rating because it’s clearly got some thought behind it, but I just don’t care for it. Very complex and unique, so points for that, but not something I’ll plan on buying again.

Bottle. Nose is sweet and malty, earthy, vanilla and spice, strong but seemingly not overdone. Pours orange with a fizzy, ephemeral beige head. Taste is very sweet, thin body, light-medium bitterness, more of the latter from the now much heavier spices than from any hop contribution. There is some pumpkin character here. Crisp, light booze, too much nutmeg/allspice/etc, barely passes muster, but I finished.

Sample at Kurtkeller 017: Pumpkin-tastic 02 on 10/13/2014. Hazy orange color with a thin off-white head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Spice, yeast and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of peppery yeast, caramel malt and pumpkin spices. The finish is sweet with a nutmeg and cinnamon aftertaste. Decent overall.

12 oz. bottle poured. Aroma is all pumpkin, with just a tinge of nutmeg to round it out. Feels smooth with just a bit of the lightest carbonation. Let this one warm up a bit before drinking it, might make it better for you.

Draft sample at their tasting room yesterday, orangy dark amber color with light tan head. Aroma of pumpkin, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), toast and Belgian yeast notes (some fruitiness, clove). Taste adds notes of caramel, allspice and citrus. Medium-light body, moderate carbonation, dry with faint fruity roast finish. Fruitier pumpkin ale, quite nice.
