A: Pours a dark brown color with a sturdy khaki colored head and mild lacing. S: A very strong smoke aroma to this beer. Some good roasted malt notes and maybe a bit of dark, bitter chocolate. Maybe a little bit of a soap in there. The smoke really dominates the nose, though. T: Kind of harsh and slightly astringent. The smoke is again at the forefront and really makes up most of the flavor. A decent roasted malt flavor and just a bit of bitter dark chocolate. M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation and a drying feeling on the tongue. D: An alright beer, even with its strong smokiness. Don’t know if I’d want to drink a bottle, though.

Dark brown pour. The nose is slightly herbal with a bit of light chicory character. There is a distinct dusty yeastiness and a little bit of autolysis that I could definitely do without. Meh - it’s really not all that great.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA, opened 1/10/10. Pours a dark ruby color with a medium tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of tart malty notes along with some roast and chocolate. The taste is chocolate, roast, berries, bitter hop finish. Medium bodied. Not bad, but the tartness does seem like its not supposed to be there.

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours turbid dark brown with minor ruby edges through direct light and a 1-finger off-white head. Nose is black patent malt, cacao, roasty slight rauchy. Tastes smooth, medium in palate heft and complexity, with flavors of black patent malt, cacao, mild nuts, coffee, hops, and a roasty dry finish.

Pours a mostly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a spotty-lacing beige head. Has a lightly sweet and nutty nose with some dark caramel and chocolate notes with a touch of smoke. Starts with pretty good fullness for the style with a chewy toasted dark caramel malty sweetness and nice dark chocolate flavor with some light peaty smokiness that lingers in the drier finish. A well-balanced, flavorful and drinkable porter.
