COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our winter seasonal is a nod to the classic altbiers of Dusseldorf. A full, toasty malt profile is countered by generous additions of German Hops. Well balanced but assertively hopped, this complex but approachable beer is ideal for shaking off the chill of winter.

Bottle into Altbier’ish glass, hazy brown’ish amber color with very light tan head. Aroma of bready malt, caramel, light chocolate, herbal and some fruity yeast. Taste adds notes of brown sugar, milk chocolate, toast, a nuttiness and earthy hop bitterness. Medium body, low carbonation, sticky with sweet bitter finish. Very tasty altbier.

Bottle from Total wine Alexandria. Pours dark brown with an inch of khaki foam. Leaves some lacing in the glass. Has a bit of caramel maltiness the nose. Decent caramel on the tongue. Eh!

12oz bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a half finger head that dissipates immediately. Aroma of sweet bready malt upfront. A fruity yeast aroma a little deeper. Hints of caramel and maple syrup. Taste is sweet and malty, with fruity esters, a hint of hops, and a slightly bitter finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, smooth.

THOUGHTS: Nice crisp beer. Lots of malt nicely balanced by the hops. Dark copper like a dirty penny Not really the best style for winter. It was more transitional to me. Like Summer into Fall or Winter into Spring. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy, dark copper with an average, creamy, off-white head that mostly diminished and left excellent lacing. The aroma had moderate caramel, biscuit, toasted and nutty malts; light floral, perfumy and spicy hops; and some fruitiness. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and bitter; while the finish was heavily sweet and moderately bitter with an average duration. There was toasted malts, hints of caramel, sharp herbal and earthy hops, floral and perfumy hops, a little biscuit, a little fruit, and yeast bread. The medium body was sort of creamy then dry with very tingly carbonation and a metallic finish.

Thanks to Bert for sending this awesome bottle from Maryland. I loved this. It’s everything an IPA is without all the oil. I’m new to the style but here goes. Pours a cloudy copper amber with a decent head that fell fast to a thin film on top and a small ring. Good lace. Nose is heavenly with malt. It’s bread, it’s caramel, it’s deep and round with a sweetness that takes a backseat in the nicest way. The hops are herbal and pungent, earthy and offer just a hint of lemon. Dark fruits whisper from the nose as it warms but they never fully evince and it’s restrained. The taste is toast and breaddy malt with a nice fullness from the understated sweetness. The hops are bitter on the tip of the tongue but it’s like they hold it back until the finish and then they realize a full bitter without a lot of oil and without a lot of resin. Carbonation is medium and the body is deft and light.

I could compare this to an IPA or to a red ale. Positively enjoyable with plenty of toast but nothing burnt. The malt is outstanding and lasting throughout the drink. The balance is excellent and the hops hold their own without becoming fruity. It’s creamy but also strong and stately. What a treat.

Beautiful radiant golden copper color and dense creamy head. Not anything I’d go after again, but not entirely displeasing either. Warm herbal/spicy nose, earthy hop tones and a well toasted grain character. Not as well balanced as the description asserts an a bit watery. Safe to say that this is a C student.

This was a really good offering from Evolution. Had a nice full body to it and had more of a dunkel flavor in the sweetness. Nice dark color and good head. Nice seasonal.

Pours clear deep amber with a medium tan head...good lacing and retention. Aroma is very faint but has touches of dry leaves, nuttiness, and a hint of sweet maltiness. Flavor has some sweet fruity/malty notes, mild tea, dry leaves, and earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and a bit sticky with an earthy/bitter finish.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Total Wine-McLean, 2/13/13

Aroma: The nose is clean and malty, some nutty notes, a bit of fruit, toasted malts, and caramel
Appearance: It pours a reddish color with a small beige head and some medium lacework
Flavor: The flavor is mid-sweet, pretty much all malts with just a tiny hint of hop bitterness to it
Palate: The body is medium, it drinks cleanly enough, with average carbonation, and a sticky finish
Overall Impression: Rater #22! This is a solid beer, but not a standout for me. It is malty, drinkable, and fine, but it just doesn’t have anything that would make you really rush out and try one.

Slightly hazy amber coloured body with a bright ruby tint and a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pale malt, alcohol, nuts, earth, very light spices and a hint of english or german hops. Light-bodied; Sharp metallic note along with some nuttiness, a hint of the hops, a little alcohol sharpness and a definite bitter earth flavour. Aftertaste shows the slow alcohol burn and a larger metallic and pungent finish, with a hint of sugars and a little spice kick. Overall, a pretty pungent beer for the style with the alcohol showing through and a bit too much bitterness for me. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Grateful Red in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 02-February-2013 for US$2.47 sampled at home in Washington on 05-February-2013.
