3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
16 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Consumed on 7-19-14. Listed as 5.1 ABV and 14 IBU. Pours a hazy, cloudy, creamy yellow with a small amount of creamy, off-white head. Yeasty aroma features orange and lemon scents. Yeasty, creamy taste features flavors of freshly baked white bread, Orange Dreamsicle, and Corn Flakes. Light body. Easy to drink. Refreshing and good beer. Unmistakably a hefeweizen. Not the most substantive beer I’ve consumed but it hit the spot on a summer day after a walk.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a hazy straw hue with thin white head. Aroma of orange citrus, banana, cloves. Taste the same. A little dry bitter on the finish which I think is flawing this beer from being great.Hits the spot but had better hef's... Schell's is exceptional.

Tap at the tasting room. Hazy dull golden color with a white head. Very nice aroma of clove and banana. A little citrusy-sour element in the taste as well. Solid!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The new Excelsior Hefeweisen was a little challenging to acquire. I was first denied access to attend their beer launch party in Maple Grove. The restaurant hostess told me only VIP people were invited to attend. I refuse to be denied a beer so it’ll just have to be a 15-mile drive to the brewery’s tap room for me to get one. Lord bless the Excelsior taproom workers. They know how to make a beer-deprived guest feel welcomed. The Helio Hefe pours a hazy golden straw colored brew with a thick and rocky white head that has excellent retention, detailed lacing that just sticks to the glass inner-side and won’t let go. Aroma has a sweet banana ester scent, a hint of clove, bubblegum, golden grain malt, and a touch of lemon zest. Taste is medium to full bodied, unlike it’s stronger banana aroma, flavor is much balanced in hefe yeast, clove and golden grain malt profile. Finish is semi-sweet, a mild banana ester yeast that slowly disappears leaving behind a golden grain malt aftertaste. A touch heavier in body compared to most summer hefeweisens I am used to but it was still worth the extra drive. Nicely done!
